Great book for beginners

I'm learning Polish because of my temporarily move to the country. At first I used Pimsleur Polish to study the language. It was helpful but I needed something more intensive. I found a Polish teacher in the local classified ads then had a family member mail me Beginning Polish: Revised edition, Volume 1 (Yale Language Series). While it had a lot of useful phrases, it was mostly dense grammar. My Polish teacher said, "This is a good book for ME to brush up on Polish." I was getting discouraged so she suggested we go to a Polish bookstore and find something else. This is the book we found.
First of all, it's engaging. There are tons of color photographs and images that make you WANT to learn from the book. Second, the audio CD, which coincides with the lessons, is produced with the beginner in mind. They voice actors talk slow and enunciate clearly. The lessons are logically organized and they simply make sense. I meet with my teacher twice a week and we go through the pages, one lesson at a time. My improvement has been much more rapid than before.
The only issue is that this is NOT a self-study book. You will need a Polish speaker to guide you through the lessons because almost nothing is defined in English. If you want to use this as self-study, you should be at least an intermediate Polish speaker.
I don't usually write Amazon reviews, but this book really turned the tide for me in learning Polish, which as you already know is a very challenging language. I've studied Spanish and Portuguese in the past and could only wish they made a book like this for those languages. Very highly recommended.

good language course

This is not the first Polish language textbook I've used, it's not even the second. It is the best though, in my opinion.
It starts off with a lot of the basics you will need in Poland, like introducing yourself formally and informally and filling in basic forms. The characters are all learners too, so they often ask people to repeat or explain things for them on the CD, which is fantastic because I don't have to have stuff translated so I can understand it!
This book focuses A LOT on grammar, which is a huge part of learning Polish, so you will need someone to work through it with you, as Polish grammer is COMPLICATED!!!! It is not a self study course! for the price though its a good deal, especially as it comes with the CD, and a website for backup worksheets, so you dont need to buy workbooks etc. what you get here is the full course.
I had about a year of Polish behind me when I started using this book, so I found the first few chapter easy, but it does get steadily more difficult. At the moment I'm using this book for half or one-third of my lessons so I can work on vocab lists (I hate grammar, I'm terrible at it, and I'm learning Polish for basic communicate, not for exams or anything) but I would recommend this course to anyone looking to start learning the language.

Impressive!

I've taken a lot of language courses, and I'm happy to say that this one is very well put together. I'm taking an introductory Polish class for adults at a Polish language school, and our teacher chose this textbook after evaluating several options. I recommend it for anyone who wants a serious yet modern introduction to the Polish language. I could see Level 1 being used in an introductory college class, but with the included audio and interactive online content, a motivated independent student could get a lot out of it as well. One point in this book's favor is that it includes some humor right from the beginning, which I think is invaluable in keeping language students engaged.
Published by the Glossa Polish Language School in Krakow, this book comes with MP3 audio files on a CD-ROM as well as online access to the text, audio and exercises. Your answers to the online exercises are checked automatically when you submit them, and when you get stuck the system will give you the correct answers. There are also online tests at the end of each chapter. To gain access to the online content, you register on the website and redeem an access code that is provided with your book.
A separately available workbook (Polski, krok po kroku: Workbook, Level 1 (A1/A2) (Polish Edition)) is also worth getting, because it contains exercises that reinforce what you learn from the main text. There are more expensive online-only "additional exercises" that you can purchase to go with the main textbook, but the workbook is more affordable and from what I have seen so far the exercises are similar. As you go through the main textbook online you initially have access to the "additional exercises," but toward the end of the first lesson you get a message (in Polish) saying that further access to the additional exercises will cost 95 euro. Online, the exercises in the workbook appear separately from the pricey additional exercises, but the chapters in the workbook do correspond to those in the textbook. I think it makes sense to do each workbook lesson after completing the corresponding lesson in the main textbook. The system saves your work as you go, but you can always clear an exercise and do it again. Apparently you can also get access to the additional exercises if your teacher has a subscription and assigns the exercises as homework. We are looking into that possibility. Note that the online version of the workbook includes quite a few more exercises than the printed workbook itself.
