I hate Bryon Douglas.

The first time I read this book I was 13 and I loved it. I couldn't relate and it angered the hell out of me but u loved it anyway. I read it again at 15 and I got a new feeling because I understood what it was like to lose friends and now I'm a senior and about to go off to college and I'm more pissed than the first time I read it and I just can't believe how things turn out. I hate bryon Douglas and I will hate bryon Douglas for the rest of my life to grow apart from your friends is one thing but friends don't turn on friends. I hate him and everything does and everything he stands for and I hate how he tries to justify his actions. I hate him.

A Powerful and Compelling Coming of Age Story

"That was Then, This is Now" centers around the lives of four adolescents. There is the narrator, Byron Douglas, a handsome charming but ultimately selfish and self-absorbed teenager. There is Mark, whom Byron's mother adopted for her own and who is Byron's best friend. Mark's penchant for mischief is too often offset by his winning smile, and he maintains a fierce loyalty to his friends. The two minor but equally important characters are Cathy, a precocious young woman who falls in love with Byron, and her younger brother M&M, a sensitive and soulful hippie wannabe.

The book moves in different actions so that it seems we're reading two novels about two brothers and best friends. In the first novel, Mark and Byron are always by each other's side, and together they witness the fearsome murder of their good friend Charlie, which scars both. In the second novel, there's a love triangle -- Byron has fallen deeply in love with Cathy, and Mark feels abandoned. The novel comes to a climax when Byron commits an act that will forever severe his relationship with both Mark and Cathy.

Like in "The Outsiders", SE Hinton has a gift for understanding and speaking the language of troubled adolescent boys, making us think she is in fact one herself. And the writing is pristine and polished, as always. But the characters are far less compelling than the ones we were entranced by in "The Outsiders," and the plot far more fragile and broken.

Still, many a teenager will find "That was Then, This is Now" speaks to them in the most haunting manner possible.

Good service.

This was very good quality service. After I finished the book, I wanted to hurl it across the room (in a good way, you know how us book lovers are, very passionate) and scream. But, I couldn't, because I was in class. This story was very, very good. One of my favorites by S.E. Hinton. I would recommend it to fans of The Outsiders, or any of her other books really. Along with that, anyone who enjoys Realistic-Fiction, and coming of age type stories.

About the Author
Barbara Creed is an associate professor of cinema studies in the school of fine arts at the University of Melbourne. A well-known film critic and media commentator, she has been the Age film reviewer for three years and an ABC film critic for the past decade. An intriguing look at horror film

Those who dislike psychoanalytic interpretations beware! This book is full of them (even one about Little Red Riding Hood!) I don't necessarily agree with them, but I do find them exceptionally fascinating. The readings of Psycho and Carrie are particularly enlightening, as well as that of Jaws (very heavy on the Freudian castration anxiety angle... but now when I watch the film I can't abide by any other interpretation).

Anyone interested in horror films and/or feminist theory MUST read this book. It is surprisingly accessible and enjoyable to read. Lower level undergrads without a cursory knowledge of feminist critiques of psychoanalysis might benefit from buying Elizabeth Wright'a Feminism and Psychoanalysis: A Critical Dictionary.

The arguments are underpinned with sound feminist theory and semiotics..very interesting to see a different perspective on well known films; it encourages more in depth critical readings of popular texts, and certainly stimulates discussion. I found the discussions of both Alien and Psycho especially, of interest.

Casey Reason, PhD, is an expert in collaboration, innovation, overcoming resistance to change, and next-level leadership. He has worked with a variety of clients, including some of the top Fortune 100 companies in the world.

Amazing and inspiring true story!

It's hard to believe what terror and pain this boy and his family went through as his country of Belgium was occupied by Germany during World War II. The story came to life for me as the author shares intense, personal details about his family and the shocking, horror of the war. His unique perspectives as a child were honest, poignant, and sometimes humorous. I was so involved in the story that I was sorry when it ended; but there's a sequel! I'm looking forward to the next book, An Immigrant Story".

On a flight from Sacramento to Denver, Professor Ken O'Neal discovers he has a telepathic and loving connectedness with flight attendant Michelle Kolberg. Fearing the growing capabilities of the Omega members, the Covens call upon their Gypsy allies, some of whom they casually sacrifice as part of their strategy to frighten and execute Omega members. Furious, the Gypsies reluctantly realize they must reconsider their alliances. The battle spills over into Europe, and some innocent bystanders who become aware of the Coven monsters in their midst pay an awful price. Eventually acknowledging the compassionate intentions of the Omega Project, the Gypsy clans cautiously develop trust and agree to help Omega launch a counterattack against the Covens, despite knowing they must face the evil Emil, who is powerful enough to kill by thoughts alone.

University of California, Merced Physics Professor Ken O'Neal flies from Sacramento to Denver musing how he already misses his wife of thirteen years Jill who remained behind due to a seminar. On the flight he appreciates the flair and attention attendant Michelle Kolberg gives to everyone on board. Twenty-four years old Michelle likes people even as she muses over whether she is the only virgin flight attendant. However, she suddenly sees herself though his eyes and likewise he sees himself through hers. Both are stunned by this telepathic connection and begin to search for other sensitive souls.

The pair creates the Omega Project at Merced. However, their good intentions come to the attention by Covens who employ mind control to feed off the brains of telepaths. When the brain of student Bonny is assaulted, war explodes between the benign Omega and the ruthless Covens led by Emil who kills without a thought while the wild card is Gypsies.

The key to this exciting good and evil battle is that in war innocent pawns die as the not pure Gypsies learn the hard way. Each side is 200 proof of either goodness or vile evilness; as the bad guys have centuries of experience and no moral compass while the heroes suffer doubts and guilt. Fast-paced, readers will appreciate these two adversarial visions of telepathic use.

This book was spell binding, and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I have always had a basic belief in telepathy and it's interesting how Mr. Cahill ties it in with good and love. There will always be evil in the world, but we need something good to believe in and he has created that scenario. Thank you to the author for a positive outlook in something that may be stonger and recognizable in our future. Read Thomas A. Cahill's book "Annals of the Omega Project - A Trilogy."

Devotees of science fiction stories will find many things to like in this book

So - I was hooked in to the book at the summary, and while I expected complexity, I did not realize that the depth of the story and concepts, all to illustrate a basic tale of good versus evil would be hidden within these pages.

It was an interesting concept, with forays into telepathy and mind-control, characters that convey good and evil in equal measures, political and tactical alliances and a battle for control. The need to know what direction the author would take Omega, and whether good could triumph was a major impetus for me to keep reading, even when I found repetition of simplistic elements, or a passage that was overly detailed and would have better served the plot with less information given, but more detail shown.

What was not clearly explained, and leaves me wondering is the apparent naiveté of the members of Omega. While they do question those they encounter about their activities, there doesn't seem to be any further investigation of the story or the belief in it. Where I was confused was if their skills were better attuned to "truthful" statements, or if the passivity of the characters that comprised Omega was not thought to be important enough to address, or somehow I missed the explanations early on. In situations where they must be offensive, the passivity does seem to fade to the background, and they do manage to focus and get things done.

Devotees of science fiction stories will find many things to like in this book, and find it unique. Some readers may find difficulty in the basic language of the text: the author is a university professor, with writing style and word choice best suited to those with a facility in the English language, and ability to follow / grasp complex scientific concepts and find the interrelations between concepts presented and plot elements happening. It was not an easy read, but it was a read that was unique in concept although I could not read this all in one sitting.
