Deborh L. Stewart's pastels have won awards from Pastel Journal Magazine, International Artist Magazine, and the Pastel Society of America. This book is the best by far I have come across that I believe ...

I have tried to move on from realistic art to abstract mixed media for over 5 years now, and I admit I'm still frustrated. This book is the best by far I have come across that I believe will move me ahead in my mixed media pursuit in abstract style finally achieving success.

This was a nice art book to read and I rarely read art books, I just buy them for inspirational pictures of art. Debora Stewart's words were helpful. I have been painting abstractly for years but it has always felt more stressful than I think it should. Her ideas and suggestions have been helpful in making my painting practice less stressful and more intuitive and honest. I bought the kindle version. My complaint with that version is that while I can change the size of the print I can not change the size of the artwork and so all of Debora Stewart's lovely work is shown in a small thumbnail size on my tablet. She does beautiful work and I would have liked to seen the examples larger and in more detail. My one suggestion to Ms. Stewart is that she expands her own color palette, she does love her oranges and purples and they are in every one of her examples. Her work is very distinctive due to her palette so I recognize it anywhere. If you want to see larger examples of her work you will have to go to her website and Pinterest. I do think this book would be useful for anyone starting out with abstract work or for artists who want to gain more enjoyment and freedom with their abstract work. This book does not do example projects in a step by step fashion so that you end up creating a piece just like the artist's which I think is not the point of abstract art, instead you learn steps toward making your own artwork. Problems reading comfortably due to poor printing choices!

If your eyes are aging or you don't have a strong light source, you will likely be unable to read this book, at least comfortably. Even if you do, I can't imagine it will be much fun, given I could barely see the fine light gray print, and didn't have a lighted magnifier handy. The text was poorly done. Too bad, since I like the artist's work.

This is a delightful book that promises to deliver loads of fantasy and fun for anyone in need of a rustic place to rest, relax, and retreat from the speed and stress of modern living. The Stiles provide more than 20 step-by-step plans for low-cost outdoor buildings, among them a grape arbor, a hillside hut, a water gazebo (floating!), a log cabin, tree houses, a wigwam, a garden pavilion, a yurt, and a river raft. A bit of individual creativity can make any of the plans described and diagrammed into unique personal statements or fantasies. Many of the plans are so simple they can be built in a few hours or in less than a day, and most do not require high levels of carpentry or building skills (though all will be useful as "learning projects" for the uninitiated). If I were a 12 year old Boy Scout or Girl Scout this would be a great book. The reviews and front pic are misleading. The book is very juvenile and not very practical for actual use. I can buy a nice tent and set it up to accomplish a better retreat than most of the items in this book. It does have some rustic enclosures that could be built if you were ever lost in the woods, or on a survival trip but not at all something that anyone wanting to build a small retreat would want to use. Who wants to stay in a bark covered pyramid. If you have spent any time in the woods or handling bark you would know that you would be sharing your "retreat" with some more primitive crawling creatures. Not my idea of fun and I am a country girl. I am returning the book. Very disappointed in this.

Outstanding book in every sense

I am simply amazed that people find this book lacking. For example, lacking photos, descriptions of doing electricity or plumbing, or whatever. For me this book defines the genre -- it is the most outstanding book on innovative shelter I have ever read.

The authors give extensive details. A single example is the illustration of how to get 1000 pounds of logs to your remote site: balanced across 2 canoes! The authors define many building techniques that are never discussed in "how to build your house" books because those books assume that you have power tools, ready access to a lumber supply, and in all probability the need to satisfy building inspectors. This book has different assumptions: you are going to build something in the wilderness (or at least your back yard) that does not even attempt to conform to the standards of the uniform building code.

I love each and every project they describe, but currently I am assembling the material for the Ivy Covered Grow Hut. I ordered a used parachute on eBay and the glue on amazon and I am buying the bender boards tomorrow. The concept of something like an igloo covered in ivy (I will use jasmine) being built way out there in the wilderness as a nomadic shelter is brilliant, simply brilliant. It satisfied a need I did not know I had, but when satisfied gave me great joy. I can backpack in most of the materials myself (the authors suggest that 2 people should build this shelter, but that is not the situation I find myself in) so perhaps it will take me 2 trips instead of the single 2-person weekend the authors anticipated.

The bottom line is that if you want a conventional house-like shelter, this book is not the book you want. But if you want to live like Thoreau or Huck Finn, this book is exactly what you need.

The pencil drawings were the only way to convey the details -- photographs would have had distracting extraneous details.

After I build the Ivy (Jasmine) Covered Grow Hut I think I will build a tree house. One with a spiral stair so my dog can get up there. And a Huck Finn raft -- the dog and me floating down some lazy river, catching fish for dinner and being rocked to sleep by the water.

I really cannot recommend this book highly enough, and I have read many many books on various types of construction, as well as having built my own home, which the building inspectors photographed to show to their friends.

Quite good but could go a bit further

This book gives you some interesting info about how to create a structure. The book has some detail but could go a bit further. The illustrations are very good I just wish there were more of them. It would be nice to have more tips about how to make the project easier. For example it talks about building a gazebo but doesn't really give you any tips on how to build a roof all the way to the top. You just wind up sort of imagining yourself fumbling around on a ladder awkwardly trying to squeeze in the last few joins. I think what you will find here is a book filled with some high level plans and a few details on how build different aspects of it. Keep in mind that he does not go into anything about electricity or plumbing for his sections on small houses. He assumes that you can do without electricity. For me this is great since I want to build a cabin and power it with solar and have a composting toilet so I don't care. I have not yet had a chance to attempt any of the projects in this book but I can say that it is inspiring and I do believe that if you were to work your way through each project in the book you would be quite accomplished at the end. He does a good job of explaining how a cabin or small house is really just a bunch of small projects put together. The author leaves it up to the reader to develop the skills so this book would be great in tandem with another book on the basics of carpentry. I hope this review helps you make the right decision. Overall I give it four stars because it has more detail than many books out there and it does a good job of simplifying the daunting task of building a structure. I deduct one star because his recipes on building a cabin or any other structure are just a few pages each and I think that is just a little on the short side. However the illustrations explain a lot. Like they say "A picture is worth a thousand words". Finally don't worry about not having a bunch of glossy photos these drawings are great and they will definitely help you understand what is going on.

I started this book and I was like I know I'm going to get my heart broken

I'm not going to lie.. when I read the sypnosis of this book I was hesitant to read it because I'm not into "triangles" because the heroine always goes for the safer choice and not the right one, but boy was I wrong... its just so much more.. I started this book and I was like I know I'm going to get my heart broken, but Its just so good that I need to continue.. I did finish it and I was freaking blown away.. I'm not a big fan of fairytales and books like this one, but this book definitely changed my POV about them.. We meet Ginger, Woodman and Cain...

I fell in love with Ginger instantly let's be honest she is just beautiful and amazing.. she won my heart when she was 12.. but boy at the end of the book I wanted my own damn Ginger

Woodman.. well with him I wanted to hate him, but I didn't in the end.. yes he was the safer choice the best friend.. we knew he was going to be the right one, but from the start I knew he wasn't the one.. I respected him in the sense of being with Ginger even thought he knew were her heart was.. its hard to deal with falling in love with someone who is obviously in love with someone else.. so kudos to you my man for that..

Cain... now bare with me here because this dude is just wow!! I have no words Team Cain for the win!!!! I loved Cain since page 1!!! yes there were times where I was like dammit Cain!!! Why Cain, etc, but I understood him completely because when you love someone as much as he did Ginger you want the best for them even when you think you're not it.. you rather see them shine and be with someone else than hurt them.. and this is what my boy Cain did he stepped aside and put aside his feelings to make Woodman and Ginger happy.. what he didn't realize was that "the right choice" broke Ginger.. In the end I was happy on how the end turned out because Cain really truly deserved to be happy..

As a guy I'm going to say that this book changed my POV in some things.. not going to get into details, but I'm glad I read it and I will continue to support this amazing author without a doubt so I give 5 Happily ever after stars to this book!!!!

How can you describe perfection??

I'm having trouble finding words to describe how I feel about this book. How can I put into words the feelings I have for characters who touched my heart in such profound ways. Katy has such a way with words. I felt every happy feeling, every heartbreak, every tear shed. I laughed at Cain's witty nature, my heart broke for the bad boy with an amazing heart.. It ached for him in so many ways. There are so many feels.. So so many.. The loss, the love, the healing, the words of wisdom. The shift in the story where it all changes.. More than once.. There are so many things I want to say... I just don't know how..

Cain ~ the bad boy with the amazing heart who does’t feel worthy
Woodman ~ the golden boy who has his life all planned out
Ginger ~ the girl they both love and she loves them both in wildly completely different ways
… How can this possibly end well????
It is destined that someone is going to get hurt…
And boy does it hurt… In ways that you won’t expect. Things happen that you NEVER see coming from a mile away.. until it hits, and it hits hard. And you're left wondering how your shattered heart will be whole again.. But it mends. Katy's beautiful way with words heals that broken heart.

I had all sorts of pre conceived notions when I stated this book.. I had a clear cut winner before I opened to page 1… that the is the problem with preconceived notions. They tend to be WRONG… This book was more than I anticipated it could be, nothing of what I expected it to be and everything I wanted it to be!! There is something that is so pure in the love they all have for one another born out of a lifetime of memories. No malice.. No intentional heartbreak so to speak and that's what hurts the most. Misunderstandings, lost opportunities, words left unsaid.. But true love has a way of finding its way no matter what..

There are things you know at a soul deep level. Who you love. Who you are meant to love in the deepest depth of your being can’t be ignored no matter what your head might tell you. Ginger always had to follow her heart..

An unforgettable love story

Ginger's Heart is Katy Regnery's new modern fairy tale based on Little Red Riding Hood. It's a story about the Three Musketeers of McHuid Farm: Virginia Laire McHuid aka Ginger and her two childhood friends Cain Holden Wolfram and Josiah Asher Woodman. Cain and Josiah are cousins (born to identical twin sisters Sarah and Sophie) and couldn't be more different.

The blond haired and green eyed Josiah is the golden boy of Apple Valley. He is the son of a local banker and is raised up in a wealthy family. The Woodmans and the McHuids are very close. They spend a lot of time together and invite each other to social events.

The dark haired and blue eyed Cain is the trouble maker of Apple Valley. His father is the stallion manager at the McHuid farm. Even though his father Klaus and Ginger's father Ranger are on good terms, the Wolframs are excluded from the fancy festivities at the McHuid household.

Despite their differences, each cousin owns a piece of Ginger's heart. Over the years the dynamic between these three will change when feelings get into the mix that go far beyond friendship.
