Darnton's latest novel on scientific themes follows Hugh Kellem, an anthropologist whose study of Darwin's finches leads him to Cambridge, where, listlessly searching through Darwin's papers for a thesis topic, he stumbles upon a secret diary kept by Darwin's second daughter, Lizzie. Darnton interweaves Hugh's investigation with excerpts from Lizzie's writings and with flashbacks to Darwin's voyage aboard the Beagle. Both Darwin's daughter and the modern researcher become obsessed with the twenty-two-year gestation period between the voyage and Darwin's publication of his theory. The solution to the mystery manages to be not only fussily elaborate but fundamentally simplistic, and it involves too many dark hints and convenient coincidences. Still, Darnton has a good feel for both the Victorian era and the modern scientific milieu.

Can't Believe I Read the Whole Thing

As an award-winning reporter/journalist and bestselling novelist, John Darnton should be more than aware of this little axiom:

When penning a novel, make sure it is interesting to the reader.

Alas, there is little interesting in Darnton's latest effort. THE DARWIN CONSPIRACY is as bland as an empty ice cream cone; Darnton's historical narrative reminded me of the sports cliche "going through the motions." Nowhere--not at any time--did a character or plot jump out to grab me, or even pique my interest. As the book moved along the pages became heavier and heavier to turn.

Told from three points of view, this book has loads of potential. Two modern day historians are about to uncover a "shocking" revelation about Charles Darwin himself. . .a discovery that won't put the founder of evolution in a very favorable historical light. We also read about Darwin's voyage upon the "Beagle" in the 1830s, as young Charles must deal with a wacky ship captain and an intense scientific competitor. And finally, we are privy to the journals and letters of Darwin's daughter Lizzie; all three plots are intertwined, and it would be great if it worked, but it doesn't.

The modern day story is boring, its characters totally one-dimensional. Lizzie's contribution requires a suspension of disbelief from Pluto itself; historically depicted as "slow," this spinster daughter of Darwin's is presented here as a woman of uncanny intelligence--yet not intelligent enough to make good decisions while in the throes of passion. And Darwin's "Beagle" adventures. . .let's just say that the climatic scene--revealed in a ten-page letter from a teenage missionary (who writes like a forty-year-old, by the by) who was with Darwin and witnessed this amazing event on desolate Tierra del Fuego--is an absolute howler. I realize this is historical "fiction," but Darnton's zinger regarding who REALLY spawned the theory of natural selection is nothing more than sophomoric slurpiness.

THE DARWIN CONSPIRACY was extremely disappointing. Having read it, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. So I did both. And I still don't feel any better.

intriguing fictionalized account (based on known facts) of Darwin

Field anthropologist Hugh Kellem tries to solve several mysteries related to Darwin. Near Ecuador, the British researcher meets scientist Beth Dulcimer, who also seeks to understand why the famous naturalist took over twenty years to release the Origin of the Species and what happened to him that changed him from a confident scientist into a near anxious recluse.

Twentyish Darwin spends five years on the Beagle taking copious notes of what he observes on his journey and becomes increasingly confident in his abilities to do his job while a rival tries to usurp his findings. His notes serve as the basis of his classic Origin of Species by Natural Selection released in 1858. In the 1870s Darwin's youngest daughter Lizzie keeps a journal that show her growing concern about her father who seemingly over night changed from a vigorous person into a frightened shadow of himself. Hugh and Beth find Lizzie's diaries.

This interesting tale uses three points of view to tell a fictionalized account (based on known facts) of Darwin. The story opens with Hugh and Beth teaming up as both fixates over learning the mysteries of Darwin and on each other (that common obsession helps). The second (and by far the most interesting and intelligently designed) subplot follows Darwin's adventures from drinking with the Captain before leaving, to seasickness, to self-assured individual and finally struggling with a competitor. The final segue focuses on Lizzie's diary. Though well written, the present subplot seems unnecessary as it turns the life of Darwin into more of an academic mystery that includes a final shocking twist. While readers will enjoy sailing with Darwin and somewhat Lizzie's follow up in his later life, the present pales in comparison.

This elegant novel traces the life of Charles Darwin from childhood to his adventures on the "Beagle", his aging years, & spinning an entrancing story of mystery surrounding his voyage companions, his family & an attempt to define the time-line delays of two decades before publication of "The Origin of Species".

The story is told most cleverly in three voices: the passionate idyllic scholars Hugh Kellem & Beth Dulcimer: his daughter Lizzie (a.k.a. "Bessie" & Elizabeth), & Charles Darwin himself. Hugh & Beth have a titillating romance while researching for lost or archived correspondence on Darwin; Lissie secretly journals Papa Darwin's activities whilst Charles chronicles an early education, role as Beagle's Naturalist & his relationship with the crew, islanders, academic associates & family.

The read is extremely good -- suffice to say each of the 3 voices have their own affairs, trysts & difficulties but in the end there is a very satisfactory resolution of these unsettled goings on. Undoubtedly, some will be wont to obtain "Goblin Market" by Christina Rossetti to read "come buy our orchard fruits, come buy, come buy..." as overheard by Laura & Lizzie -- but that's another story.

Overall this is an excellent book and covers more firearms than most of its kind, however, there were several firearms that had no photographs and definitely should have. The absence of photographs for weapons with a plethora of readily available photos such as the Bizon and thr MAC 50 could only be described by laziness or cost cutting, either of which seems unacceptable in such a volume. There's really no excuse, hence three stars.

This is a Christmas gift for a "gun person" so I didn't do anything to it except look at the cover and scan a few pages but it was much bigger than I envisioned. I am totally satisfied with my purchase and hope the recipient will be also at Christmas time. (I hope he doesn't have one already.)

Did Para-Ordnance Fund The Writing?

This book was given to me as a birthday gift, and overall I am pleased. There is a good deal of small arms history presented that is well worth reading, and the number of rifles, handguns, and full-auto weapons listed with accompanying photographs make this nice addition to the library.

That said, I don't get the feeling the publishing was completely unbiased, as I would hope for something claiming to be an encyclopedia. The back cover states the it "Features all the most significant and famous firearms." However, after spending 20 minutes with book I already discovered the lack of, among others, the Smith & Wesson Model 27 and Sig P210. Indeed S&W only get a dedicated four pages in the entire handgun section. Who get's a dedicated full seven pages? Para-Ordnance. Huh? No discussion of S&W's flagship revolver or the (arguably) best semi-automatic military sidearm ever made, but each and every clone of the 1911 made by Para-Ordnance gets a photo and full paragraph? Furthermore, regarding the picture of the 1911 on the cover? It's not a Colt, but a Para-Ordnance. Taurus was also apparently more deserving of dedicated space than either Colt or Smith and Wesson.

Now, I have no fundamental problem with a book like this being partly advertisement for the writer's funders, so long as they're honest about it. However, I have yet to find any such disclaimer.

About the Author
Dr. Andrei Grebennikov is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Member of Editorial Board of the International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering. He received his Dipl. Ing. degree in radio electronics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Ph.D. degree in radio engineering from the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics in 1980 and 1991, respectively.

He has obtained a long-term academic and industrial experience working with the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics, Russia, Institute of Microelectronics, Singapore, M/A-COM, Ireland, Infineon Technologies, Germany/Austria, and Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent, Ireland, as an engineer, researcher, lecturer, and educator.

He lectured as a Guest Professor in the University of Linz, Austria, and presented short courses and tutorials as an Invited Speaker at the International Microwave Symposium, European and Asia-Pacific Microwave Conferences, Institute of Microelectronics, Singapore, and Motorola Design Centre, Malaysia. He is an author or co-author of more than 80 technical papers, 5 books, and 15 European and US patents.

In 1989, Mr. Sokal was elected a Fellow of the IEEE, for his contributions to the technology of high-efficiency switching-mode power conversion and switching-mode RF power amplification. In 2007, he received the Microwave Pioneer award from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, in recognition of a major, lasting, contribution  development of the Class-E RF power amplifier. In 2011, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, for developing the high-efficiency switching-mode Class-E RF power amplifier

In 1965, he founded Design Automation, Inc., a consulting company doing electronics design review, product design, and solving ‘‘unsolvable’’ problems for equipment-manufacturing clients. Much of that work has been on high-efficiency switching-mode RF power amplifiers at frequencies up to 2.5 GHz, and switching-mode dc-dc power converters. He holds eight patents in power electronics, and is the author or co-author of two books and approximately 130 technical papers, mostly on high-efficiency generation of RF power and dc power.

During 1950–1965, he held engineering and supervisory positions for design, manufacture, and applications of analog and digital equipment.

He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1950.

He is a Technical Adviser to the American Radio Relay League, on RF power amplifiers and dc power supplies, and a member of the Electromagnetics Society, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi honorary professional societies.

Marc J. Franco holds a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia. He is currently with RFMD, Technology Platforms, Component Advanced Development, Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, where he is involved with the design of advanced RF integrated circuits and integrated front-end modules. He was previously with Linearizer Technology, Inc. Hamilton, New Jersey, where he led the development of advanced RF products for commercial, military and space applications.

Dr. Franco is a regular reviewer for the Radio & Wireless Symposium, the European Microwave Conference and the MTT International Microwave Symposium. He is a member of the MTT-17 HF-VHF-UHF Technology Technical Coordination Committee and has co-chaired the IEEE Topical Conference on Power Amplifiers for Radio and Wireless Applications. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

His current research interests include high-efficiency RF power amplifiers, nonlinear distortion correction, and electromagnetic analysis of structures.

Highly recommended

This book covers a lot of topics on switchmode amplifiers, including a great treatment on Class F and inverse Class F. The authors writting style is not the best, I dont know if its too formal but language seems to be an extra barrier added to the complexity of the topics. That being said, this book delivers as promised, there are even ADS examples on amplifiers which you can reproduce on your own.

Yet, in many writers' zeal to be `curriculum-relevant' or `authentic' or `realistic', the items are often developed seemingly without conscious thought to the interpretations that may be garnered from them. This book argues that the format for such alternative items and exercises also requires rigor in their construction and even offers some solutions, as one chapter is devoted to these alternative formats.
This book addresses major issues in constructing test items by focusing on four ideas. First, it describes the characteristics and functions of test items. A second feature of this book is the presentation of editorial guidelines for writing test items in all of the commonly used item formats, including constructed-response formats and performance tests.
A third aspect of this book is the presentation of methods for determining the quality of test items. Finally, this book presents a compendium of important issues about test items, including procedures for ordering items in a test, ethical and legal concerns over using copyrighted test items, item scoring schemes, computer-generated items and more.

About the Author
Dr. Steven J. Osterlind is Professor of Measurement and Statistics and Director of Educational Psychology program, University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Osterlind s expertise is in psychological assessment, including tests and measurement, statistics, psychometric methods and test development. He received his doctoral degree in 1976 in Educational Psychology (Measurement & Statistics) from the University of Southern California. In 1979, he was an American Scholar s Fellow at Yale University. At the University of Missouri he teaches graduate-level courses in multivariate statistics, analysis of variance, regression, general linear modeling, and psychometric methods. Additionally, he teaches seminar courses on specialized topics, including Item Response Theory and Computer Applications of Testing. He has worked on numerous national testing programs, including serving as statistician for NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress). In licensing and certification, he has worked with dozens of professional associations and organizations on their assessment programs. Dr. Osterlind has authored five books, the most recent of which is a major textbook titled Modern Measurement: Theory, Principles, and Application of Mental Appraisal; and, he has written more than 60 articles, book chapters, and other research reports in assessment. Additionally, he has authored more than 20 tests. He is principle author of College Basic Academic Subjects Examination (C-BASE), a test of collegiate achievement test currently adopted by more than 100 universities across the nation.

useful, practical advise

This is the only book that truly addresses important practical aspects of how to writer quality test questions. But is is more than just a "how to" book. It gives information about many aspects of test construction that can lead to valid score interpretations. Unique in the field. I recommend it to anyone in the testing industry.

This is an important book. We know because Dr. Osterlind tells us so over and over. For a hundred bucks, it ought to be. There's really little here that Gronlund, Haladyna, and others haven't written about before. What's really disappointing is that the examples are rife with the type of careless errors and inconsistencies he so decries. Psycometrician, heal thyself!
