About the Author

David Flanagan is a computer programmer who spends most of his time writing about JavaScript and Java. His books with O'Reilly include JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, JavaScript Pocket Reference, Java in a Nutshell, Java Examples in a Nutshell, and Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell. David has a degree in computer science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives with his wife and children in the U.S. Pacific Northwest bewteen the cities of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia. David has a blog at www.davidflanagan.com.

Yukihiro Matsumoto ("Matz"), the creator of Ruby, is a professional programmer who worked for the Japanese open source company, netlab.jp. This is the new authoritative Ruby book and the one to buy.

Originally planned as a second edition to Ruby classic, Ruby In A Nutshell, The Ruby Programming Language is a new book by David Flanagan and Yukihiro Matsumoto (a.k.a. Matz - creator of Ruby) and published by O'Reilly. The book covers both Ruby 1.8 and 1.9 and with its esteemed authors and technical approach, is sure to become a new "Bible" for Ruby developers.

As of the start of 2008 this book is REALLY fresh and up to date. Its style is very direct and matter-of-fact; well suited for existing Ruby developers and proficient developers coming from other languages. The examples are clear and logical and the explanations concise; this is a well edited and authoritative book.

The structure of the book is a delight with ten well-defined chapters (with titles such as Reflection and Metaprogramming, Statements and Control Structures, and Expressions and Operators) that each contain a tree of sections. Consider Chapter 4, Expressions and Operators. A sample dive down to section 4.5.5.2 takes us through 4.5, Assignments; 4.5.5, Parallel Assignment; and finally to 4.5.5.2, One lvalue, multiple rvalues. This is a breath of fresh air in a Ruby reference work.

The only downside, in terms of the thousands who might be browsing Amazon looking for a single Ruby book to start off with, is that this book is so well focused on documenting the core elements of the Ruby language, it doesn't work either as a tutorial / beginner's introduction to Ruby, or as an exhaustive reference work (as, on both fronts, the Pickaxe attempts to be.) This lack of dilution may be an ultimate strength, however, since anyone above the station of "beginner" will be able to learn Ruby thoroughly from this book, use it as a general reference, and then be able to use the exhaustive documentation that comes with Ruby itself to cover the standard library and built-in classes.

In conclusion, whether you're an existing developer or a newcomer to Ruby, you need just three things to be up and running with Ruby in the book / documentation department. Buy this, the Ruby Way (by Hal Fulton), and learn how to use the documentation that comes with Ruby.

This book will act as the "Bible" for Ruby, the Ruby Way will make you an expert, and learning how to use the documentation that comes with Ruby will mean you're not using information that's out of date within a couple of years. The perfect combo! It'll last you for years.

'The Ruby Programming Language' is one of 'those' O'Reilly books that become staples in the family of GREAT texts that have come before. At 400+ pages, the following content is discussed:

05. Statements & Control Structures
06. Methods, Procs, Lambdas, Closures
07. Classes & Modules
08. Reflection & Metaprogramming
09. Ruby Platform

Logically laid out, wonderful writing, clear and concise examples with a length that is 'just right' (this is so hard to not find bloated books) this is perfect for those that know some Ruby and/or programming in general. If you are new to software development, this book probably is NOT for you as it's not a "learning" text. There are other Ruby books that cover said topic though so make sure to pick those up as well.

Awesome job O'Reilly for this relatively new and fast growing language that is used on the web and wherever you want!!

In my top 10 of all time...

This book is quite simply one of the finest software development books ever written. The style, the length, the scope, and the structure are all absolutely perfect. The balance creates a reading experience that seemingly opens a channel to your brain and feeds the information in.

Flanagan is a master author of technical books, especially languages. His JavaScript book is equally well done. Matsumoto's unique technical mastery here leaves no stone unturned. And even the artwork by "why the lucky stiff" added a fun element that just rounded out the book as the best in its class.

If I could forget the whole thing, just so I could read it again, I would. It is that good.

Great touch of suspense!

Truly enjoyed this romance with a heroine who is 40+ and a plus-sized woman!

After barely surviving an abusive marriage, Marcelle is rebuilding a life for her and her autistic, teen daughter. While that would be enough for any woman, the brother of her best friend is interested in her...and he's YOUNGER. I could relate to Marcelle's dilemma because I'm not into younger men, but I think she was way too dramatic. Probably because of her recent past, but dramatic none-the-less. She created problems for herself because of rushed decisions and over analyzing things. She placed much too much value on what OTHER people MIGHT think of her - much too exhausting. She also carried too much guilt from her marriage. Blaming herself for her ex's issues is typical from what I understand about abused women, but when she fought back, SHE FOUGHT BACK! Loved it! Rod, you are the jerk of the world!

Loved Dylan! Most definitely mature beyond his years, his sincerity leaped off the pages! He loved her, he wanted her, but he was not going to be a yo-yo. BUT...he seemed to appear just when she needed him most. That would have sealed the deal for me.

The author's edgy suspense with the stalker was straight out of an old-fashioned whodunit! Just when you think you've got it figured out - SURPRISE! Excellent mis-direction!

At first, I thought the ending was a bit too rushed, but then I considered just how long they'd known each other, and what it took to get them together (FINALLY!), and then I was happy with - and for - them both.

I whole-hardheartedly recommend this sweet love story.

Age Is Just A Number!!!

I was one of the lucky few who received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I must start off by saying I especially loved this book because MJ was an older woman and Dylan was much younger man. MJ moved back home and is starting over after an abusive marriage & messy divorce, boring job and having a child with autism. Dylan is her best friends brother whom she has had feelings for since they were younger. Come to find out Dylan has had feelngs for MJ too back then. She decides to join a gym which she later finds out that Dylan owns. Their feelings for each other surface but MJ has a major problem with the age difference. Dylan sees nothing wrong and continues to pursue MJ. I don' t want to give away too much but I'm glad MJ wised up and got her feelings for Dylan in check. Dylan amazed me by how he dealt with Sadie. The ex husband got what he deserves. This story shows that older women can still pull them young men. It made it more special because they are interracial. Looking for the follow-up story. Great Job Roxy!!

This is the first book I have read from the author, and will be looking for more. I enjoyed the romance of an older woman and younger man. I enjoy IR and found this to be great and an interesting read. There were several laugh out loud moments. I like that the guy owned his own business, a gym. I also liked that the female lead did not obsess over her looks and deem herself unworthy because she wasn't stick thin. Her issue was the age difference. I will admit to being exasperated, like Dylan. However I am glad that he hung in for the long haul. There was also a history of abuse with MJ, so it made sense with her being skeptical. The daughter's autism was an interesting touch and timely. I have family members with it and it is nice to have this addressed in novels. it added a touch of realism.

John Campbell is Director of Cuisine and Food and Beverage at Dorchester Collection's Coworth Park. Previously he was Executive Chef at the Vineyard at Stockcross, where he received many accolades including two Michelin stars and the Chef Award and Education and Training Award at the 2008 Cateys. Professor David Foskett MBE CMA FIH is a best-selling author. He is Head of School at the London School of Hospitality and Tourism at Thames Valley University. He was awarded Catering Educator of the Year 2004 and, in 2008, received France's Agricultural Order of Merit for his work promoting French food and food education. Neil Rippington is Dean of the College of Food at University College Birmingham. The first-century Christians had to sort out Jesus from Judaism in order to become a people for all nations. Today, we have to sort out Jesus from our religious traditions in order to make Him available to our nation. That’s the challenge we face: Will we be the church without walls, communicating a gospel free of traditional and cultural trappings? Or will we continue to reproduce our forms and structures, hiding the essence of the gospel within?

About the Author
JIM PETERSEN is an associate to the general director of The Navigators. In 1963 the Petersen's pioneered The Navigator ministry in Brazil. They began with university students and then followed them as they started families and moved into their careers. This, in time, expended the ministry into a movement across Brazil. In 1973 Jim began to recruit and coach missionary teams for other Latin American countries. From 1986 to 2000, he served as a vice president on the International Executive Team of The Navigators. In those years, he coached ministry teams in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa as well as in Latin America. Through living and ministering in many cultures, Jim has acquired a wealth of experience in reaching and discipling people who are normally outside the Christian context. He shares what he has learned in his books Living Proof, Church Without Walls, Lifestyle Discipleship, The Insider and Mor e Than Me. (all Navpress). Jim and his wife, Marge, have raised four children and live in Colorado Springs.

Book that challenges tradition

This book challenges the concept of the Christian Mega-Church, and the role of Christians in the modern world. In Church Without Walls Petersen puts forth the following two point thesis:
1. Christians are in the world (not separate from it) in order to spread the good news about Jesus.
2. Every believer has a role in this process.
I think that he successfully argues his point, and provides a litany of supporting evidence (mostly historical) to show why the concept of the Church (the Body of Christ) has lost its place in the world over the centuries. By explaining a short history of the Church, Petersen points out that many good ideas that were relevant in their time, have become steep traditions in the Church, and lost their effectiveness. While this argument is interesting, especially if you do not know a lot of Church history (I fall into this category), it does get a little boring in certain sections of the book.
The part of the book which I found most compelling, was about my role as a Christian in the Church. Basically, Petersen points out that the "If we build it they will come" philosophy that many churches follow today is not working. We are not reaching the unchurched, and will continue to fail in this effort, unless a change is made. More specifically, every Christian needs to be out the in the world, modeling and explaining Christ's love to an American culture which has become quite indifferent to the Church.
I think that Petersen's analysis is accurate and convincing. He spells out how we are to do this, and what the Church should do to support this effort. If this topic is of interest to you, then you should read this book. It will challenge you to rethink your role in the Church, and take a hard look at whether or not the Christian community is being effective in a world that so desparately needs to hear the truth and love of Jesus.
Although I think that Chuck Colson's book "The Body" will give you a more profound look at today's Church, this book does a better job of explaining our role in the process. Coupled together, these two books will hopefully inspire Christians to step out of their comfort zones, and truly make a difference in the modern world.

An Amazing Book!

This is a balanced yet radical new look at what it means to be the Church in our day and in our culture. Peterson reminds us that Jesus gave us the command to "Go" into our world and make disciples. Instead we have told the world to "Come" to us! Peterson's analysis of the form of the Church being elastic enough to fit the function in each location and culture is truly life-changing; I was changed by this book. I have given copies to many friends who are also being challenged to "Go" in new and exciting ways. Out of five stars I would give it six!

Much-needed Biblical evaluation

I highly recommend this book to all Christians who want a well-reasoned approach to the Biblical concept of the Church. Petersen challenges the reader to re-think traditional, cultural "add-ons" to corporate worship of God and to seriously consider St. Paul's practice of "becoming all things to all men" for the sake of the spread of the Gospel to those foreign to practices familiar to the American Christian. -- Joseph W.
