Great effort but not quite there

The book is written with broken English, poor spelling and grammer. I have been a mud engineer for only 4 years but some of the info in this book is not 100 % accurate and even I notice it and I consider myself a novice in drilling fluids. If you haven't been to mud school or offered any in-house mud school at your work the book will help out. You can still learn more about mud from this book than any rig hand or Co. Man will tell you. There is so much misinformation in the oil patch that it is ridiculous.

Easy, Concise Read

Finally a book where the author(s) give the information to you straight up and do not try to impress you with their math skills. The title is correct. The contents of this book are very practical, easy to understand and apply. I'm so impressed with this book that I'm also going to read the other text by Ron Lenk titled "Practical Design of Power Supplies".

Strategic HRD is the Perfect Text!

This book is a sensational choice for a graduate course in Human Resource/Human Resource Development. It's very readable, but not simplistic. One of its major advantages is that is includes the history and foundations of the field of HRD, but also includes chapters on some of the "cutting edge" trends and concerns of Workforce 2001. I am using it for the HRD Survey course and intend to recommend that all of our doctoral students buy the book as an excellent supplement to all of their specialization courses. I think it's the best book on HRD now available.

Robert Barclay spent much of his life in Kwajalein. He now lives in Honolulu. This is his first book.

About the Author
Robert Barclay, a twenty-five resident of Hawai'i, was raised on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. His previous short stories have appeared in Manoa, Hawai'i Review, Hawaii Pacific Review, Don't Look Back, and Scribner's. His novel Melal, published by the University of Hawai'i Press, was short-listed for the 2003 Kiriyama Prize, and was selected by Barnes & Noble for its Discover Great New Writers program, among other honors. The novel is currently being adapted into a film by producer and director Vilsoni Hereniko, whose first film, The Land Has Eyes, was a featured film at the Sundance Film Festival.

My eyes were flung open

For me a great book is one where I keep going back and rereading to clarify or deepen my understanding of sections, and to put off starting another book because it was so fully satisfying. I have travelled may times to French Polynesia, Bali and Southeast Asia and somehow thought the Americans treated their "protectorates" somewhat better than the European countries--this book was a rude awakening to me. This is a part of our nuclear history I never gave much thought to, nor has there been adequate coverage of the evils of Nuclear Testing--I kept being shoked that these things were hapeening in the '60s and still in the '80s. Reading this was like a gunny sack to the head--hey, there were people on those island, DUH.

I liked the book from the start, but had some problems with all the names of gods and demons. At times the sheer ugliness of some of the images would overwhelm me, but then it would become clear what the author was trying to relate in a beautiful metaphor or a shocking parallel. These passages would be balanced by the many lyrical passages, compelling images and exciting story lines. I was left thinking about so many aspects of modern versus traditional life. There are almost too many images overlaping in layers to do a review service, but a couple of my favorites were the adventure with the dolphins in the fountain (with a whole other perspective about the use of dolphins opened to me), and the Good Friday incident with the statue of Jesus. By the end I kept jumping back to the mythological stories, very unlike any I have encountered before and was pbusy reviewong the many paradigm shifts I had to make during the reading. Satisfying and fulfilling on every level.

The place is the Marshall Islands. The theme is universal.

Every morning, Rujen Keju takes the 3-mile ferry ride from his home on Ebeye in the Marshall islands where he lives in squalor, to his job at the sewage plant at Kwajalein, the American-run island which is off-limits to him after the workday. He's accepted this as his way of life, and his older teen-age son, Jebro, is supposed to start working there also after the weekend. By the end of the day, however, he and his two sons come face to face with challenges, which will change their outlook forever. It just happens to be Good Friday, 1981 and the symbolism of that day is one of the many intertwining themes in this novel by first-time author Robert Barclay.
Rujen encounters a series of mishaps that day, including having his work-boots stolen, and the reader is drawn into his story as he goes through the day, trying to conform to what is expected of him and looking forward to his volunteer job as an usher at the Catholic church later. In the meantime, his son Jebro and his younger brother Nuke, set out on a small boat to visit the homeland of their grandfather, a small island which has been declared off-limits to Marshallese people. To add another dimension to the story is the magical tale of mischief-making gods and demons appearing as characters who play tricks on each other.
The story is told through alternative chapters, turning a flashlight on one harsh reality after another as the characters struggle through their day. And yet, there is sense of humor throughout, as we see each character's strengths, weaknesses, complexity and growth. Everyone is breaking some sort of minor law, including three American teenagers who are cutting school and out fishing that day. Their encounter with the two young brothers is both frightening and inspiring as they, too, learn a lot from the day's events.
I was immediately drawn into the writing and couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and I loved the situation. I also gained understanding of the history as well as and myths and legends that define the Marshall Islanders as a people. I usually don't like books that include magical characters, but these were so outrageous that they held my attention completely. The author is great at description and he lets himself go really wild as he describes the demons. Another theme throughout is scatological which addresses the very real issue of sewage management on the islands. And then there are the themes of father and sons, and Good Friday suffering. But best of all is the theme of love and camaraderie and lessons learned.
This book is a small gem that not only taught me a lot, but also made me think. Even the conclusion, which is indeed satisfactory, is something that gave me even more food for thought. I hope to hear more about this author, who now lives on Hawaii. His is fresh clear voice brings reveals some universal themes. Highly recommended.

A rewarding study of the military's role in American society

This book is an effort to bring to bear the tools of social science (Janowitz is a sociologist) in explaining the interrelationship between the military establishment and civil society in America. In the author's own words, this work is "an attempt to describe the professional life, organizational setting, and leadership of the American military as they have evolved during the first half of this century." Of particular interest to the era in which this book was published (1960) is the role of the military in the age of atomic warfare. Janowitz discusses the power the military establishment has as a "pressure group" over domestic affairs and international relations. In this world of technological change, Janowitz explores the adaptability that is required of the military establishment in order to keep the system "healthy" and how this affects not only society's view of the military, but the military's view of itself. Janowitz identifies a rift in professional military thinking, one which he compares to civilian disagreements over conservative and liberal policy. In modern society, the military has necessarily come into close contact with the "political fabric of contemporary society" and has thus come to play a role in sociopolitical affairs--both directly and indirectly. Janowitz's focus is on how both civil society and the military establishment will be changed by this modern interdependency.
In the vein of the social scientist, Janowitz puts forth five basic hypotheses and seeks to test them. Briefly encapsulated, these five hypotheses concern: a changing organizational authority, one more oriented to group consensus than to unqualified directives; a narrowing skill differential between military and civilian elites, brought together by the military's increasing dependence on technical specialists; a shift in officer recruitment to a broad socioeconomic base; the importance of adaptiveness and boldness in reaching an elite position in the military; and the development of a "political ethos" around the military profession in the modern age. He describes a changing role for the military elite; the modern "professional" soldier must somehow maintain an aura of "heroism" while also serving in a position of management of men and machines, topped off by a commitment to public service--both nationally and internationally.
Determining the future role of the military is made more difficult by a rift between two schools of thought within the military profession. The traditional school sees war as "absolute" and inevitable, a means by which to achieve political goals. This "conservative" mindset has been challenged during the atomic age, as more "liberal" thinkers, fearing the unpredictable effects of modern warfare, promote a "pragmatic" approach to warfare, with an emphasis on adaptation of military means and negotiation as the proper means by which to secure political ends. Janowitz and other social scientists favor the "pragmatic" approach, arguing that because the military cannot possibly remain in isolation from the polity, both civilians and the military elite must cooperate in the interest of mankind both at home and abroad.

Janowitz incorporates into his study qualitative sources involving individual human perceptions as well as quantitative data from questionnaires and statistical profiles. He is not entirely successful at incorporating a historical dimension into his argumentative framework, and there is a lack of documentation for a number of generalized notions he espouses. There are, as well, a number of factual errors--e.g., his reference to the historian John Hope Franklin as James Franklin Hope. This book is designed to make the reader ask new questions of the role of the military in American society, and in this it is successful. 40+ years after its original publication, it is still a valuable read.

Excellent Historical Overview and Background

In trying to better understand Islam, I bought this book on Amazon and have found it to be quite good- excellent, in fact.

I was not looking for an in-depth scholarly work, but an overview and perspective. Mission accomplished. Each chapter is neatly organized into topical information that follows logically and neatly dovetails into the previous chapters.

The full color photographs are excellent- I truly wish more books would offer up such visuals as well as Bloom and Blair have in this book.

If you're looking for depth ad naseum, this isn't your book. But if you're looking for an interesting read with a reasonable index and reasonable "cast of characters" outlined both in the book and in the index, give this one a shot.

Fascinating

This is a wonderful introduction to the Islamic Empire and (to some extent) Islam itself. It's meant to be a companion to the PBS video "Islam: Empire of Faith." It covers the same time period (the first 1000 years of Islam), but doesn't have the same exact content as the video. There is some overlap, but not enough to make either the book or the video redundant. This book is written by a husband-and-wife team of professors (historians) at Boston College. This is not dry history, by any means, but a vivid description of Islam and its origins, practices, and political rule. It's not sensationalist and/or imbued with the "Islam as Enemy Number One" mentality that pervades so many modern books about Islam (many of which are written by journalists or other people not qualified to be writing about Islam, Muslims (American or not) and the Muslim world in the first place). It's just fascinating reading about the second largest religion in the world and how it built the most glittering civilization the world had ever seen. The authors themselves say that to understand Islam today, we must focus not on the misdeeds committed by a few in its name, but "appreciate its glorious history and achievements." It doesn't have much on Islamic beliefs and practices or Islam and politics: it really is mostly history. But it's history that puts Islam (modern and past) into perspective and that will (hopefully) help us Westerners put some of myths about Islam finally to rest.

Easy reading

This book is suitable for readers who wish to get a good introduction to the history of Islam. A good point to note is that it does not incorporate the cliche biasness that the west perceives of the religion and its followers. If you wish to find stories about terrorism, PLO and Osama bin Laden then this is not the book for you, the closest you can get to that is the ancient assassin sect. From the book, one can appreciate how much Islam has enriched civilization! Also, I found it exceptionally interesting to discover so many English words that originated from Arabic which the author has included. However, at times, i do find the book a little fragmented and also there are times where I felt that the author just had not included enough information to satisfy. Nonetheless, a good read. Enjoy!
