So You Want To Be A Stylist.....then READ this book!

As a fashion professional I'm usually not impressed by style books especially those that promise to give "insider" tips! However, Sasha has cracked the code, sharing real information that is imperative for any one that wants to be in the business of styling or for the gal or guy that wants to look styled! I love that the information she dispenses isn't just from her experience, she calls on her friends that just happen to be the TOP STYLISTS in the game and we get their trade secrets as well! Every fashionista has a library of must have fashion books, now we have a new one to add on the list!

A Very Insider Guide

Read this book if you want to be a stylist when you grow up. This is not a great guide for real, grown-up women looking for every day style advice.
A lot of the information reads like warmed over articles from every fashion and beauty magazine you've read in the last 10 years. And since Ms. Charnin has written for Allure and others this makes sense. I for one am tired of style guidance having to be tied to celebrity and there is a lot of that here. I was looking for something smarter.
I got a lot more out of Style Evolution by Kendall Farr and How Not To Look Old by Charla Krupp.

Only buy if you want to become a stylist

This book is good if you want to become a stylist, but it't not really interesting to your average fashionista. Perhaps I misunderstood what the book is about, but I thought it would be more of a generic "how to" in styling yourself, from professional stylists to the stars. Instead, it's very "industry-based", so I got a little bored.

Well worth reading, and then emulation

The topic is uninteresting, unless you are interested in "shame." This is not a teeth-shattering thriller to be read in the daylight like some mystery who-done-it! But the way the author handles the issue, slowly working her way around it--while carefully examining and then peeling it away so as to reveal more, is amazing. This is good scholarship, even great scholarship worn on the sleeve and one may learn a lot not only about shame, but about how to go about interpreting an issue under research and study. Well-done!!

This is one of the most famous, most frequently cited, most taught works in moral psychology in the last two decades. Its themes are closely related to Taylor's famous essay on "Deadly Vices?" In addition to the thorough analysis of pride and the important distinctions drawn between shame and guilt, the book employs a highly nuanced cognitive theory of emotions that does not simply equate emotions with value-judgments, but ties them to complex perceptions of concrete value-gestalts (like Bob Roberts's book on emotions). About the Author
Donald Goines (1936-1974) was a career criminal and addict who took up writing during one of his seven prison sentences. Between 1969 and 1974, he published sixteen novels, which are now recognized as almost unbearably authentic portraits of the roughest aspects of the black experience.

Cookin' a slow death

"The white powder looked innocent lying there in the open, but this was the drug of the damned, the curse of the mankind: heroin, what some "smack," others "junk," "snow," "stuff," "poison," "horse." It had different names but the same effect. To all of its users-to all- to all of the dopefiends in Detroit ghetto - it was a slow death. - Donald Goines.

Before reading Dopefiend I never knew the importance of an addict having their `morning do' and unclogged works. I never imagined what it would be like to shoot dope in veins in places such as your neck, in your groin or between your toes or could even envision such sordid actions like sleeping with dogs for example. I never imagined what it would feel like having a monkey so heavy on my back that I routinely dug a bottomless pit of hell, or engaged in such acts that slowly took away my soul leaving only my shell.

Donald takes you through physiological minds from two perspectives, the drug dealer and the user. While the user is digging his exit with a slow death, the dealer believes he's holding the winning hand in the game. Dopefiend is a very bleak description of drug usage that takes place in the 70's in Detroit Michigan. It takes us through the transformation of several addicts and what begins and ends when you use heroin.

I enjoyed this novel from top to bottom; I liked how Donald would dedicate an entire chapter to a particular character giving us enough time to bond with what was happening during their downfall. His style of writing is excellent and very easy to follow. His vivid details made me feel like I was in the drug house helping Smokey find a vein, or running out of the local store with my floor model black and white TV screen. Should you pick up this street lit classic, you won't be disappointed.

I give Dopefiend a solid 5 stars.

This is my favorite Donald Goines book and one of my favorite books of all time.

I read 10 of his books . "Dopefiend" basically takes you threw the life of two dope fiends a man and a woman. one from a poor family and one from a middle class family. it is a great book it would answer any questions that u would have about dopefiends. like : why would some one even consider shooting up ?? or why would some one risk there life?? why cant they quit?? why would they even start?? and many more questions. it is very detailed and grimy. donald goines keeps it all the way real about the life of a dopefiend.

BE DRUG FREE....

This is the third Donald Goines book that I have read and it is by far, the most gritty, graphic and gory one I have read yet. This man's descriptive abilities are so awesome that it makes you sick sometimes, but in a good way. If you are a person that has never really been exposed to drugs and the toll that they take on the user, and the way users live and breathe their next fix, then this is the book for you. At the end of this book, you will no longer have to wonder about junkie/dealer relationships or the effects of drugs, because Goines has given you all you need to know. Great read!
