H.R. D'Costa delivers a very helpful resource for any creative or screenplay writer, regardless of the genre. The author highlights the importance of 'when and why your hero must go through a living hell.' In addition, movie examples are presented to show the reader the utmost importance of drama, and emotion.

More important, the author discusses the horror situations of why writers get stuck, winding up with blank pages, as the reader is coached in the right direction with the right approach. The information provided, along with helpful examples given by the author guides the writer in creating the difference between a boring novel or screenplay, or a fascinating story that keeps the reader entertained from start to finish. Great advice, packed with helpful tips, and extremely useful for screenplays or creative writing. Highly recommended!

This book does a great job on getting you brainstorming the ending of your Act 2. And does a good job of showing you how that will ultimately influence other aspects of your story.

Unfortunately like most books on writing this book takes on the form of make a minor point followed by 10 film examples...then make next minor point followed by 10 film examples. Over and over and over again.

I often would get to the end of a section and the next bold point would be "Aspect #3 Paradoxical." I would have to think back 50+ pages in the past and be like oh ya I am still in the "3 Aspects of 2nd Act endings" section.

This virtual series by H.R. D'Costa is hitting critical areas that screenwriters new and old must emphasize to wring all of the emotional potential out of their characters and stories. There's a lot here to absorb. The movie examples used are helpful and appropriate - often even more than is needed. Many of today's screenwriting publishings don't focus on the most critical dramatic story sequences, which is why I think this specific focus is of great value. You'll find yourself outlining the types and approaches here, and coming out the other side with a new perspective on your screenplay.

The Alienist. A nice, funny satire on insanity. Questions the values and systems of the new psychiatrist or psychologist of the time in Brazil in the 1890's. This isn't a medical or realist story, just a critique of the baselessness of psychiatry and it shows just how "dangerous" it can become. I found it to be wry, humorous, and amusing. Machado De Assis reminds me a bit of Miguel de Cervantes.

A chapter on the historical development of theoretical movements, trends and ideas makes connections between and among theories across a century of development. Separate entries on major theories bring together similar methods or objects of study, such as Form, Structure, and Narrative, and short biographical sketches provide a handy reference for key theorists and their major works. The final section of the Handbook features brief readings of literary texts—including works by Shakespeare, Conrad, Faulkner, Beckett, and Rushdie—each informed by multiple perspectives that exemplify theoretical practice.

About the Author

Gregory Castle is a professor of British and Irish literature at Arizona State University. He is author of Modernism and the Celtic Revival (2001), Reading the Modernist Bildungsroman (2006), and The Blackwell Guide to Literary Theory (2007) and has  edited Postcolonial Discourses (2000) and the Encyclopedia of Literary and Cultural Theory, vol. 1 (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011). He has also published numerous essays on Joyce, Yeats, Wilde, and other Irish writers.

Gregory Castle's explanations are clear and the writing really flows -- this takes mind-bending theory and lays it out in a very straightforward way. I highly recommend this book to students, enthusiasts, professionals and anyone who is interested in theory!
