Great book for both practitioners and academics

This book is an excellent choice for those who are looking for a text on real applications of simple but fundamental mathematical techniques in reliability and maintenance. Both authors have been involved in industrial projects in this field and the book is a summary of their experience over the last 33 years. Most of the examples are based on real applications and industrial case studies accomplished mostly by the first author (Andrew Jardine). You do not need advanced mathematics to understand the cases, however many mathematical concepts are explained in the appendices using a very simple language. The book starts with a nice summary of all the fundamental concepts in reliability and maintenance management. It talks shortly about soft aspects of maintenance such as TPM, RCM, Continuous improvements, etc and uses an interesting frame work to connect them to each other. In chapter two, it shows how the best time to replace a component or simple device can be found using simple mathematics. It then brings several applied examples which will help the reader to fully understand the concept and how to apply those simple but essential techniques. It talks about age based replacements and block replacements and discusses when we should choose one of them over the other. It also introduces a software that can simply do all the mathematics and find optimal replacement times. In Chapter 3, it talks about the inspections problems. It shows how we can find the best inspection policies based on simple mathematical models using different criteria such as minimization of the cost or downtime. Then it talks about the condition based maintenance modeling and shows that how we can find the best replacement policy based on condition indicators, age of the system, cost of preventive replacement, and cost of a failure. It shows some examples and defines software called EXAKT which is claimed to be well capable of finding the optimum replacement policy. In chapter four it talks about optimal replacement interval for capital equipment. It shows how we should take into account Life Cycle Costs in order to find the best time to replace the current equipment with a new one of the same type or one which is more technologically advanced. The best policy is the one that minimizes the total discounted costs over the time. It introduces two softwares called AGE/CON and PERDEC that can be used to find those optimal intervals without being worried about the mathematical burdens. Chapter 5 is titled "Maintenance Resource Requirements". It basically shows that how one can use basic queuing models to find the optimum number of spares, required manpower, machine shops, and decide whether it is better to do a job in house or contract it out.
I see this book a must read for both graduate and undergraduate students, practitioners and consultants because it creates a very strong and valuable link between world of mathematics with the one of practice.

And it examines the deadly, technological game between the bomb-makers and the authorities who sought to stop them across the course of some 19,000 bombings.

Oppenheimer really did his homework for this book, interviewing not only former bomb disposal officers but also individuals associated with the Irish Republican Army. He visits the headquarters of the Irish police in Dublin to see their unique museum of IRA weapons. As well as mortars, AR-15 Armalites (the IRA's favorite), booby-traps and letter-bombs there is even a partially-completed torpedo, intended for use against patrol boats.

Oppenheimer repeatedly shows how the Irish were highly adept at picking up the latest technology. Within two years of the invention of dynamite, Clan na Gael were starting to use it, and the subsequent campaign against the British was known as the "dynamite war." The new explosive was powerful, portable and stable, making it ideal for terrorist bombings. Gelignite was also adopted as soon as it became available.

But the IRA also excelled at home-made explosives. They pioneered fertilizer bombs using ammonium nitrate and developed several recipes or their own such as 'Donegal Mix' or ANNIE - ammonium nitrate, nitrobenzene and diesel. (The book recounts how fertilizer had to be ground up using coffee grinders - a slow process when making a 3,500 lb bomb.) The IRA were also masters at the use of Semtex, an advanced plastic explosive known as 'the magic marble' for its destructive power; although they acquired several tons from Libya, they used Semtex very sparingly, often as a 'booster' to set off cruder explosives.

Oppenheimer gives a good account of the arms race between bomb-makers and bomb-disposal, and the "deadly ingenuity" is very much in evidence. Sometimes, the escalation is simple. In the early days, the IRA used to lob grenades into open-top army trucks. The army put chicken wire over the top of the trucks so grenades would bounce off -- so the IRA started using grenades covered in hooks to catch on the wire. The game of cat-and-mouse eventually became far more sophisticated, with multiple bombs being set to go off in sequence, and devices with dummy mechanisms set as traps to catch bomb squad officers.

In an echo of the current anti-IED effort, the security forces produced ever more sophisticated jammers to stop radio-detonated bombs, while the IRA used ever more sophisticated detonation techniques, moving "up the spectrum" to devices triggered by infra-red beams and photoflashes. They also had devices triggered by a sniper's bullet -- line of sight, but hard to jam. One of the many incidental details is the use of a timing mechanism which employed a condom; this was something of a moral dilemma for the Catholic IRA, as supplies of condoms for bomb-making might be misused...

When it became difficult to plant an IED next to a target, the IRA developed a range of improvised mortars -- at least seventeen different versions over the years. Some of these were mobile systems with multiple tubes on time delay, left in the back of a camouflaged van be parked near the target. One of these nearly killed Prime Minister John Major on Downing Street in 1991. The largest were "flying car bombs" throwing a charge of 150 pounds of explosives. There were also improvised rocket launchers, recoilless rifles (one using a reaction mass of digestive biscuits), and even prototype anti-helicopter weapons.

Oppenheimer is unsparing in the description of the carnage caused by the bombs, and has many first-person accounts of the aftermath of explosions ("all I could make out was the top of a torso"). While the stated target was usually the British forces or police, and while warnings were often given, frequently things did not go to plan. Many women and children were "accidentally" killed. This was not a clean war; booby traps were attached to dead bodies, and hostages were forced to drive bomb-laden vehicles towards Army buildings. The British were also capable of ruthlessness in their turn.

Unlike some writers on this topic, Oppenheimer gets a three-hundred-and-sixty degree panorama, including the bomb-makers' point of view. You get a sense of the technical challenge, the exhilaration when a bomb goes off successfully. And the sense of complete justification: "I've never had a sleepless night over anything I did as an IRA volunteer. Bombs are weapons of war," one bomb-maker says. "Western states have used them far more brutally than we ever did." Because they saw their struggle as legitimate, any civilian deaths were seen as "an unfortunate consequence of war." All this chimes rather closely with more recent terror groups.

The book also gives a good account of the politics involved, and how the conflict eventually came to an end. 9/11 turns out to be a key date: up until that point, the U.S. paid little attention to terrorism in Northern Ireland and the IRA could count on aid from supporters in America. Afterwards, the situation changed completely, and this was a significant factor in the final negotiations.

This is a history book; the peace has been holding for years and the IRA has officially abandoned the armed struggle for good. But the book is well worth reading by anyone interested in the current "war on terror" to understand how a terror campaign works and how it can be tackled.

Andy Oppenheimer's unique perspective as a scientist, journalist, and historian - with a deep knowledge of the weapons of low-intensity combat - has yielded an impressive addition to our knowledge of "The Troubles". IRA: The Bombs and the Bullets is a unique resource - particularly as Oppenheimer delves into the minutiae of explosive devices and especially their often ingenious triggers. His book shows a side of PIRA at odds with the unsophisticated Loughgall-type attacks, with JCB diggers filled bucket-loads of high explosives. The technical skills and impressive imagination of the PIRA bomb-makers is well show-cased throughout the book. Although a tighter job of editing would have been appreciated, this new work stands alone for those looking for a broader view of PIRA's operational capabilities than are typically produced.

For anyone interested in the IRA and this aspect of Irish and human history, it is more than worth the time and money. If you have all ready read about the IRA (biographies, autobiographies, all-encompassing histories, histories focused on the modern era, etc.) then this book will add to your experience. It consolidates and presents information in a very accessible way - and this only underlines the huge human cost of this conflict.

Steamy Romantic Suspense

Addicted, by JoAnn DeLazzari is a steamy romantic suspense that delves into the dark and dangerous world of drug trafficking and corruption at the highest level. At its heart is a passionate love affair between two people who are unexpectedly thrown together in their quest for justice. I found this to be a much hotter read than many others in this genre, which for me was a definite plus!

In Addicted, Nikki Bradley, a well known journalist, enters the jungles of Columbia, to avenge the death of her brother who died of a drug overdose. She intends to find evidence against the man responsible, expose his drug ring and ruin him. In doing so she is taken prisoner by a drug trafficker, Kingsley Shaw. King, second in command to the local drug lord Pascal, has his own agenda and claims Nikki as his woman. This not only keeps her safe from rape and certain death at the hands of the other traffickers, but also prevents her from jeopardising his mission to find out who is behind the drug operation.

Nikki believes that King is a dangerous criminal as he keeps her his prisoner. He is also not averse to using some violence against her to prevent her escape. Their forced intimacy reveals a strong mutual attraction, which they both find it hard to deny, causing a lot of sexual tension and frustration. King will not force Nikki to capitulate to him sexually and Nikki fights her attraction, being repulsed that King is a drug smuggler. Before Nikki knows the truth about his true motives they reach an uneasy truce so that they can each satisfy their goals and they become lovers.

The complex plot includes violence and action, subterfuge, kidnap and many nail biting scenes, which take place in Columbia, Puerto Rico and back in the USA. The man behind the drug cartel is not going down without a fight, and he fights dirty, using his considerable resources to destroy Nikki, King and King's associate Rob. The reader is kept guessing as to whether the couple will achieve their goals and also if they will have a future together, as the plot goes through many unexpected twists and turns before the tale reaches its climax.

King is an alpha male with a strong heart, adept at defending himself and Nikki and dishing out violence when necessary. He admires Nikki's guts and determination and the fact that she makes him laugh. King realises early on that he has fallen in love with her and needs to protect her at all costs, professing his love to her, which I liked. He is a caring and masterful lover whom Nikki soon becomes addicted to.

Nikki is both stubborn and feisty, determined to expose the man responsible for her brother's death, even risking her own safety as she very much wants to be an equal partner with King. Her relative inexperience with men and her reluctance to commit heightens the sexual tension between the couple. Nikki's initial ignorance of King's true motivations lead her to feel very angry, betrayed and used by him at one point, though she finds it impossible to resist him. Whilst I generally liked the heroine, I felt that some of her actions exposed her and others to unnecessary danger. However, perfect people do not always make for the most entertaining narrative and this tale was certainly a great read. Overall I felt that the hero and the heroine were well matched and I enjoyed the passion, humour and self-sacrifice in their volatile relationship, and their passionate and steamy love making scenes.

There are many other key players, including Rob, King's associate, Senator Eversham and Pascal, the drug lord, to name a few. I enjoyed the humorous banter between Rob and King and also Rob and Nikki and found their adversaries to be worthy opponents. All the characters were believable and well rounded, all playing their part in a plot which involves high level politicians, drug producers, traffickers and those who wish to bring them to justice. I enjoyed the inventiveness of the plot and the way the author balanced the romance with the suspense element of the plot and I would definitely read her past or future work.

I recommend this book to readers who like to read an action packed and sensual romantic suspense, with an alpha hero and a feisty heroine.

'Addicted' is addictive! An amazing passionate romance, suspense and thriller that definitely keeps the reader on their toes throughout. JoAnn DeLazzari has completely filled this novel with excitement, adventure, fear, fun and action with the odd amusing comments made by some of the main characters, Nikki, King and Rob. Within the first few chapters of reading this novel I could not help but remember movies such as 'Romancing the Stone' and 'Crocodile Dundee'!! Although a completely different storyline (with plenty of hot, saucy moments!), we have the setting of the jungle, the attraction of the woman to the man and the disgust and fear of the man to the woman - as well as the comedic one liners and sarcasm. However, as 'Addicted' unfolds there is more intensity regarding the physical relationship of the two main characters as well as a serious underlying plot.

A high profile reporter, Nikki Bradley, in the Colombian jungle is trying to find sufficient evidence to bring down a high and mighty drug trafficking operation after her brother died of a possible cocaine overdose. However, when she is found and captured she finds her captor wants to have her for himself! King, her captor, happens to be a ruggedly handsome man that makes Nikki fear for him but also strangely desire him. Nikki finds herself torn between surrendering and losing hope on her mission or taking a risk and fighting for her brother! The heartbeat definitely increases pace during this great sexy, intense thriller/adventure!

Nikki's character is possibly what one would believe a reporter to be like. She is very independent, intelligent, outspoken, strong-willed, aware of others and her surroundings and over time has developed survival skills having reported on many major new stories from across the globe. However, it is great to see a different side to Nikki after being captured as she does reveal a vulnerable side, making it easier for the reader to connect with her.

I do like Nikki's character, however King steals the show for me! Here we have a dangerous, menacing drug trafficking captor who would stand up to any man who questioned him. However, when Nikki is captured he steps forward and ensures that his men are aware that she is his! I absolutely love this storyline. Here is this fearsome individual, taking hostage a young woman, and yet he is handsomely rugged and mysterious and preventing the rest of his men to harm her. The intensity and fear he allows Nikki to feel truly does make the heartbeat faster. Why does he want her for his own? What will become of her? With only the two of them to share his cabin, Nikki is left alone with King who has a strange way of teasing and threatening her with desire.

The reporter in Nikki wants to fight for survival. Does she run? Can she bring these criminals down? Or, does the woman in her try to find a way to give in to King's desires? The scenes between Nikki and King are very intense, with King teasing her until she finds herself thinking more and more about him. When they are together it is very intimate and reveals a side to both characters that they obviously haven't shown in a very long time. However, as they both have other reasons for being where they are they have to make decisions on their own missions.

Once the reader is quite familiar with both characters emotionally and physically the story carries on unfolding, providing more trouble for both Nikki and King. The novel takes the reader on an action/adventure, thriller suspense as we follow the characters through Puerto Rico and Los Angeles. Although both characters have their own ultimate goals, throughout the travelling, dangerous surroundings and threatening characters around they have to use their survival skills/instincts which mostly brings them together even more.

One of my favourite characters, aside from King and Nikki, is Rob. Rob is a man of King's and also a friend of his. At times when King has other tasks to carry out Rob is asked to keep an eye on Nikki. Therefore, over time Rob begins to know Nikki quite well and, as man in the middle, he sees both of their perspectives and can be the logic that they both need when their own minds are clouded with thoughts of each other!

JoAnn DeLazzari has written this novel beautifully. From the beginning the reader engages with the two main characters, their motives and passions, and is also aware of the underlying plot. We are then taken on this wild ride of being scared but curious about King and so wanting Nikki to give in to her desires. I was gripped throughout and did not want to put the book down. My only disappointment was when it ended, making me want to read it all over again. I would love to hear more about these characters!

I would recommend this novel for readers above 16yrs, due to the passionate and steamy sex scenes.

I enjoy hot romances with an edge. This is well written, well plotted, and an all around good story. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read. But be warned it is spicy.

About the Author

Manfred Bochmann is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Director of the Wolfson Materials and Catalysis Centre at the University of East Anglia, where his research centres broadly around synthetic organometallic and coordination chemistry directed towards homogeneous catalysis. A former Head of the School of Chemistry, in 2003 he was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Medal for Organometallic Chemistry. Bochmann is the author of two Oxford Chemistry Primers on organometallic chemistry, and is an Associate Editor of the journal Organometallics.
