Great touch of suspense!

Truly enjoyed this romance with a heroine who is 40+ and a plus-sized woman!

After barely surviving an abusive marriage, Marcelle is rebuilding a life for her and her autistic, teen daughter. While that would be enough for any woman, the brother of her best friend is interested in her...and he's YOUNGER. I could relate to Marcelle's dilemma because I'm not into younger men, but I think she was way too dramatic. Probably because of her recent past, but dramatic none-the-less. She created problems for herself because of rushed decisions and over analyzing things. She placed much too much value on what OTHER people MIGHT think of her - much too exhausting. She also carried too much guilt from her marriage. Blaming herself for her ex's issues is typical from what I understand about abused women, but when she fought back, SHE FOUGHT BACK! Loved it! Rod, you are the jerk of the world!

Loved Dylan! Most definitely mature beyond his years, his sincerity leaped off the pages! He loved her, he wanted her, but he was not going to be a yo-yo. BUT...he seemed to appear just when she needed him most. That would have sealed the deal for me.

The author's edgy suspense with the stalker was straight out of an old-fashioned whodunit! Just when you think you've got it figured out - SURPRISE! Excellent mis-direction!

At first, I thought the ending was a bit too rushed, but then I considered just how long they'd known each other, and what it took to get them together (FINALLY!), and then I was happy with - and for - them both.

I whole-hardheartedly recommend this sweet love story.

Age Is Just A Number!!!

I was one of the lucky few who received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I must start off by saying I especially loved this book because MJ was an older woman and Dylan was much younger man. MJ moved back home and is starting over after an abusive marriage & messy divorce, boring job and having a child with autism. Dylan is her best friends brother whom she has had feelings for since they were younger. Come to find out Dylan has had feelngs for MJ too back then. She decides to join a gym which she later finds out that Dylan owns. Their feelings for each other surface but MJ has a major problem with the age difference. Dylan sees nothing wrong and continues to pursue MJ. I don' t want to give away too much but I'm glad MJ wised up and got her feelings for Dylan in check. Dylan amazed me by how he dealt with Sadie. The ex husband got what he deserves. This story shows that older women can still pull them young men. It made it more special because they are interracial. Looking for the follow-up story. Great Job Roxy!!

This is the first book I have read from the author, and will be looking for more. I enjoyed the romance of an older woman and younger man. I enjoy IR and found this to be great and an interesting read. There were several laugh out loud moments. I like that the guy owned his own business, a gym. I also liked that the female lead did not obsess over her looks and deem herself unworthy because she wasn't stick thin. Her issue was the age difference. I will admit to being exasperated, like Dylan. However I am glad that he hung in for the long haul. There was also a history of abuse with MJ, so it made sense with her being skeptical. The daughter's autism was an interesting touch and timely. I have family members with it and it is nice to have this addressed in novels. it added a touch of realism.

John Campbell is Director of Cuisine and Food and Beverage at Dorchester Collection's Coworth Park. Previously he was Executive Chef at the Vineyard at Stockcross, where he received many accolades including two Michelin stars and the Chef Award and Education and Training Award at the 2008 Cateys. Professor David Foskett MBE CMA FIH is a best-selling author. He is Head of School at the London School of Hospitality and Tourism at Thames Valley University. He was awarded Catering Educator of the Year 2004 and, in 2008, received France's Agricultural Order of Merit for his work promoting French food and food education. Neil Rippington is Dean of the College of Food at University College Birmingham. He has received awards for his part in developing the City & Guilds Diplomas in Professional Cookery, and is a consultant and principal examiner for the Hospitality Diploma for two major awarding bodies. About the Author
JIM PETERSEN is an associate to the general director of The Navigators. In 1963 the Petersen's pioneered The Navigator ministry in Brazil. They began with university students and then followed them as they started families and moved into their careers. This, in time, expended the ministry into a movement across Brazil. In 1973 Jim began to recruit and coach missionary teams for other Latin American countries. From 1986 to 2000, he served as a vice president on the International Executive Team of The Navigators. In those years, he coached ministry teams in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa as well as in Latin America. Through living and ministering in many cultures, Jim has acquired a wealth of experience in reaching and discipling people who are normally outside the Christian context. He shares what he has learned in his books Living Proof, Church Without Walls, Lifestyle Discipleship, The Insider and Mor e Than Me. (all Navpress). Jim and his wife, Marge, have raised four children and live in Colorado Springs.

Book that challenges tradition

This book challenges the concept of the Christian Mega-Church, and the role of Christians in the modern world. In Church Without Walls Petersen puts forth the following two point thesis:
1. Christians are in the world (not separate from it) in order to spread the good news about Jesus.
2. Every believer has a role in this process.
I think that he successfully argues his point, and provides a litany of supporting evidence (mostly historical) to show why the concept of the Church (the Body of Christ) has lost its place in the world over the centuries. By explaining a short history of the Church, Petersen points out that many good ideas that were relevant in their time, have become steep traditions in the Church, and lost their effectiveness. While this argument is interesting, especially if you do not know a lot of Church history (I fall into this category), it does get a little boring in certain sections of the book.
The part of the book which I found most compelling, was about my role as a Christian in the Church. Basically, Petersen points out that the "If we build it they will come" philosophy that many churches follow today is not working. We are not reaching the unchurched, and will continue to fail in this effort, unless a change is made. More specifically, every Christian needs to be out the in the world, modeling and explaining Christ's love to an American culture which has become quite indifferent to the Church.
I think that Petersen's analysis is accurate and convincing. He spells out how we are to do this, and what the Church should do to support this effort. If this topic is of interest to you, then you should read this book. It will challenge you to rethink your role in the Church, and take a hard look at whether or not the Christian community is being effective in a world that so desparately needs to hear the truth and love of Jesus.
Although I think that Chuck Colson's book "The Body" will give you a more profound look at today's Church, this book does a better job of explaining our role in the process. Coupled together, these two books will hopefully inspire Christians to step out of their comfort zones, and truly make a difference in the modern world.

An Amazing Book!

This is a balanced yet radical new look at what it means to be the Church in our day and in our culture. Peterson reminds us that Jesus gave us the command to "Go" into our world and make disciples. Instead we have told the world to "Come" to us! Peterson's analysis of the form of the Church being elastic enough to fit the function in each location and culture is truly life-changing; I was changed by this book. I have given copies to many friends who are also being challenged to "Go" in new and exciting ways. Out of five stars I would give it six!

Much-needed Biblical evaluation

I highly recommend this book to all Christians who want a well-reasoned approach to the Biblical concept of the Church. Petersen challenges the reader to re-think traditional, cultural "add-ons" to corporate worship of God and to seriously consider St. Paul's practice of "becoming all things to all men" for the sake of the spread of the Gospel to those foreign to practices familiar to the American Christian. -- Joseph W. Satan is No Match for Jesus

In this sixth essay on significant encounters with Jesus from the New Testament Tim Keller addresses Jesus' baptism and subsequent temptation by Satan in the desert as depicted by the Gospel of Matthew in chapters 3 and 4.

Keller goes on to dispel the notion that if we do things God's way that we will protect us from the evil one. The reality is that no one was more obedient to God the Father than was Jesus, and yet His life was one of constant battling with the evil one. As Jesus had to battle the enemy, so must we.

Tim answers three crucial questions in relationship to our own warfare with Satan: (1) Who is Satan? (2) Where and how does the enemy fight us? and (3) What is our best defense against the wiles of Satan? He then goes on to demonstrate the erroneous views of Satan in our day namely: monism and dualism. We either have a tendency to underestimate or overestimate the power of Satan over us.

Ultimately our best defense against the enemy is in our knowledge and application of the truth. Jesus knew and used the Word mightily in His battle with the enemy and so must we if we expect to stand in the day of temptation. The most important reality we have in the battle with the enemy isn't just the Word on paper, but the Word Incarnate.

Keller writes, "We don't simply have a Book, as perfect as it is-we have Jesus himself, who has been through fiery trials so intense that we can't imagine them. And he has done it all for us. Now, strengthened with his deep empathy and tender power, we can come through it all at his side.

In this short essay Keller provides encouragement and steps for victory in the battle with Satan as we seek to live our lives in, through, and for the Lord Jesus Christ. We can have no fear of the enemy because Jesus has already won the battle, and will lead us on to victory in the end.

Encounters with Jesus

Timothy Keller is in the midst of releasing a 10-part series called "Encounters with Jesus". If all the books are as solid as the ones which I have read, they are well worth your time. As a pastor, one of my biggest impediments in leading others to know Christ is that they believe they know him already. They have grown up in the church, gone to Sunday School, heard all the Bible stories, and they think that is the equal as knowing him.

The books in this series question the assumptions we make about Christ. Each book in the series covers a conversation Jesus had with someone. These conversations were not about individual sins or particular theological beliefs and practices, nor were they a bunch of talking points or a political platform. Instead, in these encounters we see him meeting people at the point of their important, unspoken questions: Who are we, and why are we here? Why be a good person; why love rather than hate? What's wrong with the world--And what, if anything, can make it right?

The Gospels are crawling with encounters that made a deep impression on those who conversed with Jesus in this way. Keller examines these encounters and how they can still address our questions and uncertainties today.

So far, I have read five:

In "The Two Advocates" Keller examines John 14. He hones in on the promise of the Holy Spirit in particular. Keller looks at our natural understanding of a bar of justice and our need for an advocate. He shows how Jesus advocates for us and how the Holy Spirit complements in this role at Pentecost. Pastor Keller demonstrates how a God who is a good example and supporter isn't enough. "Those things would be helpful, but on their own they would fall short of what we need. If that bar of justice exists-and our consciences bear witness to the fact that it does-then we need a true Advocate"

He also contrasts nicely the work of the first Advocate from the second. Jesus, he argues, advocates for you to the Father, whereas the Spirit advocates from God to us. He is testifying to the truths that Jesus proclaims above in the throne room of grace.

Keller explores the depths of the trinity in a truly approachable fashion. He writes with urgency for our Christian life. These are truths we need to thrive as sons and daughters of God.

In "The Great Enemy," Keller explores Jesus's baptism and his temptation.

Keller explains that Satan frequently attacks our status as sons and daughters of God. He whispers doubtful words about God's delight in us. "For those of us who know in principle that we are adopted, loved sons and daughters, Satan wants us to slide back into a self-image based on our moral performance, our goodness and effort".

Like all the books in this series "The Great Enemy" is very practical, Christ-centered, and entrenched in the Scriptures.

"The Grieving Sisters", which is the story of Mary and Martha mourning their brother's death. Here, we are faced with the questions, what does the world need, and who can make the world right? Keller examines the individual personality of Jesus and shows us that because he is both God and man, he is capable of providing everything we need.

"The Wedding Party" covers Jesus' very first public act in starting his ministry was to turn water into wine in the middle of a wedding celebration. Here, Keller unpacks the significance of the feast--a symbol of the end of judgment, the celebration to come, and the atonement needed to make it possible.

"The First Christian" delves into an encounter between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, one of his most beloved followers. In this book, Keller illuminates the Christian belief of faith and make sense of its function in solving the crucial mysteries of life.

Each book is wonderfully written and easy to understand, yet deep in truth and wisdom.

Love this series

In The Great Enemy, Keller explores Matthew 3 (Jesus's baptism) and 4 (His temptation). He revels in the delight of the Father in Jesus in his baptism and, therefore, his delight in us as his sons and daughters. This truth seems hard to believe when we experience pain, suffering, or sin.

Keller argues from Matthew 4 that Satan frequently attacks our status as sons and daughters of God. He whispering doubtful words about God's delight in us. "For those of us who know in principle that we are adopted, loved sons and daughters, Satan wants us to slide back into a self-image based on our moral performance, our goodness and effort" (186 of 618).

He also points out how Jesus defeated these lies when Satan attacks him--with Scripture. He does this for our benefit because he could have slain Satan with a single word.

Extremely practical. Robustly Christ-centered. Entrenched in the Scriptures.
