Part One begins with the earliest evidence of prehistoric mathematics, astronomy, and other science. Dr. Sarton then describes the achievements of Egypt and Mesopotamia, the dawn of Greek culture and the remarkable flowering of Ionian science in the sixth century B.C. Thales of Miletos, Anaximandrox, and Xenophanes are among the important figures discussed. An entire chapter focuses on the influential doctrines of Pythagoras.Part Two opens with the glory of Athens in the fifth century B.C. and its magnificent achievements in poetry and the arts, philosophy, and science. Described in lucid detail are groundbreaking contributions of Heracleitos, Anaxagoras, Protagoras, Zenon of Elea, Parmenides, Democritos, and many others. Also included in this section are perceptive discussions of geographers and historians of the fifth century (Herodotos, Thucydides, and others) and Greek medicine of the fifth century (chiefly Hippocratic).
Part Three focuses on the extraordinary Greek thinkers of the fourth century B.C.: Plato and the Academy, Aristotle, Xenophon and many others, including such important schools of thought as the cynics, stoics, skeptics, and epicureans. Major attention is given to mathematics, astronomy and physics, natural sciences and medicine, Aristotelian humanities, and historiography and other topics.

A polished gem

I bought this book six years ago and have kept it within reach ever since. Open it up at a random page and you will find a gem of an essay on Babylonian astronomy, mummification techniques, the first etnographer, or urban planning in ancient Greece. Sarton has managed to compress more than thirty centuries of scientific history in 600 pages without becoming superficial. He starts with the Babylonians and ends with the ancient Greeks. Nothing is omitted. You will read about astronomy, astrology, biology, mathematics, literature, history, crafts, technical achievements, etnography, trade and economics, mining, government organization, law, medicine, animal husbandry, and - of course - philosophy.
George Sarton writes balanced, with authority and clarity, but first and foremost with great love for his subject. His view is balanced and spiced with an enormous number of delightful details. Did you know that the first Greek colonists brought an urban planner with them? Or that citizens of Athens received a tax credit in 473BC because of a windfall in mining revenues? The Egyptian scientist who got it wrong but asked the right question will have Sarton's sympathy. The Greek philosopher who made his name by reycling ideas stolen from the Babylonians is condemned.
I should stop writing before I get carried away. Let me say one more thing: it is truly astonishing that this book has not become an instant bestseller.

Read this in 1973 preparing for exams. admired it then. Reading it now at leisure and mainly for myself, i am astonished. This, in addition to an all but unimaginable breadth of research and scope of coverage, is a monument of a kind of humanistic learning now passing away. Everyone would profit from the introduction and a chapter or two. S. wrote with great honesty and sympathy. Rather than list matters about which Aristotle was wrong or where he has been superseded (news flash!) S. shows what he accomplished, e.g. This great work of humane erudition places us on a scientific journey rather than atop a ladder of outmoded theory, erroneous facts, superstition, and the like.
this could be required learning for the entire world.

Loved it, loved it, loved it

I've been reading all the books of the Bentini Brothers each time I think that I've read the best book. Now I know that this book is the best.

The first thing is Tony and Ti... I just love them. Ti has finally grown up because in the first three books Ti complained and questioned herself to much about should she be with Tony or not. However, she definitely has grown I actually fell in love with her. What can I say about Tony, he saw what he wanted which happened to be Ti and went after her. I hope they have a HEA.

Kathy finally has her will. Thank goodness I thought she would never stop crying. She is so sweet but get a backbone. I could not believe she just stood there allowing Alison to say those awful things about her. William should be sorry about the way he treated Kathy. Yes, he definitely did need to apologize to her.

I can't wait to see what is going on with Bit to and Mya

Yes Mrs. Bentini you do owe those girls an apology. However it is so sad that you can accept Kathy and Willow but you continue to grit your teeth and your response to Antonio's news about he and Ti having a baby said it all. Then I remember Ti is an African American woman who will have biracial children and Kathy is a white woman who will have white children. It is so sad that there are many Mrs. Bentini's in this world.

Jaye McCloud you should think very seriously about writing an entire series about all the Bentini children. You have introduced all the Bentini children since Book 1 and because they are a close family we have gotten to know them. It would be great to follow all the children as they go through the ups and downs while finding their true love. The ending of the series could be they all get together for their parents anniversary. What a HEA.

If you love strong Italian alpha males that can twist ya back...this book is for you! This is a BWWM book. I have read all of the books in this series and I have to say.....IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER! Ms. McCloud knows how to write a story. I love Ti and Antonio! Their story is progressing nicely. Antonio is all man and he definitely takes care of his woman. He has no problem letting anybody know, whether his parents, siblings or her parents, that that is his woman and she will be respected. Ti loves her man, but something is holding her back from making the commitment of marriage, but it is not because she doesn't love him as much as he loves her. Then you have her friend and former co-worker, Kathy and Antonio's brother, Will. This couple has been through years together, but mostly in secret because of Mrs. Bentini. In this book you get to see the Dragon Lady attempt to change, but I can't wait for the next book to see if this occurs. Then you have Ti's sister Mya and Antonio's best friend Vitto. From the second book you can tell that Vitto is into Mya, but in this book you are in anticipation for what's to come because things are starting to shake up for these two people. I found myself asking if there is history here. The ending of this book has me on pins and needles waiting for the next one to drop. Ms. McCloud offers her books as romance and erotic romance. I have all the erotic romance and I would suggest that you read these books in order....SO GO BUY YOURS!

Story is all over the place.

I took me awhile to purchase this book. This book like the ones prior had the potential to be very good. But, once again the author missed the mark. The flow of the book is very confusing. She narrates the story and then switches to POV. The chapters do not flow and there numerous grammatical errors. Still with all that you still will find yourself liking the story. I did get fed up with Ti. In fact, she really got on my nerves. None of the characters are really likeable with the exception of Antonio and Vito. I don't know if Ti's sister Mya is really going to be redeemable in the next book. There is just nothing to like about her. I will probably purchase the next book just to see how the drama ends. Unlike some books, this is not one you know you will re-read. There are tons of potential with all the characters in these books. Unfortunately, the books fails to flesh them out. Maybe if she had given each couple their own stand alone the books would have flowed better. On a more positive note, I am glad William finally got a backbone. Hopefully, the author will continue to improve. Her books do have potential..

Released in January 2008, The Architecture of Light is a lighting design textbook that merges fundamental lighting knowledge with graphic techniques for generating and communicating lighting design. The 264-page book is the brainchild of Sage Russell, a lighting designer at San Diego-based Lumia Light Studio and instructor at the Design Institute of San Diego. When asked what inspired him to publish the book, Russell says, "Having taught lighting design to architects and interior designers for seven years, each semester I struggled to provide them a text resource that was practical and applicable in the context of a one-semester lighting education." Specifically created as a tool for design professionals whose primary focus is not lighting design, The Architecture of Light concentrates on visual data to provide a deeper understanding of the lighting decision-making process. Color diagrams, photographs, and renderings are used to educate readers about the controllable aspects of light--both electric and daylight--and how they can be applied to architectural spaces. The text, which features 28 chapters divided into three parts--the fundamentals of light, designing light, and deliverables--presents procedures that architects and designers can follow to develop an architectural lighting solution that enhances the design intent of a project. In addition to outlining the process of lighting design, Russell includes a series of chapters that focus on lighting fundamentals such as the physical properties of light and color, physiology of vision, and the characteristics of electric light sources. Use With Caution

I practice and teach lighting design in New York City, and bought this book to see if it would be useful for my students. As an easy read for a home owner who wants to learn more about lighting, this book is fine. However, I don't recommend this as a design textbook.

The biggest problem is in the explanation of lighting calculations, which is simply wrong because most of them ignore the distance that light must travel between the light source and the point of interest. We all know from experience that the farther away a light source is, the less light it delivers. When distance is introduced it, too, is incorrect. One type of calculation utilizes the Inverse Square of the distance between the light and the target. However, squaring the distance doesn't produce a measurement of square feet, just the result of a mathematical function. If light travels 10 ft., for example, squaring that distance produces the number 100, not 100 sq. ft. Where would those square feet be found?

The general design approach is well written and useful. However, the chapter on calculations should be skipped entirely.

Great intro to lighting

I am building a new LARGE home and wanted to get information to figure out the lighting scheme. This book was actually interesting and enjoyable to read. I have already read dozens of different books to be prepared for the homebuilding process (I will be my own general contractor) and have found this to be one of the most useful with real information and not just buzzwords.

That being said, if the author or publisher is reading this, you MUST do a thorough proofreading before the next printing because there are MANY typos in the book (I would seriously fire whoever was in charge of proofreading!)

I am very happy I bought this book since I really had no background in lighting and this provided a good basis.

In an industry known for confusing acronyms, undeciferable number sequences and cut sheets, this book acts like a road map for understanding the multi faceted world of lighting design. Delightfully straight forward and easy to read, each of Russell's steps is outlined clearly to help teach a general method for approaching lighting a space depending on your end goals rather then a micro managed process of what goes where in each room. The concepts are balanced with doses of real world insight and finished off with a great breakdown of sample fixtures and their applications. Explaination and illustration of cut sheets, lamp details, lighting maps, sample interiors and exteriors all contribute to the book's clarity. Whether you are an industry professional hoping to brush up on your understanding of current technique or a student trying to get a good general introduction to the field this book is sure to be exactly what your looking for.

Excellent Work

This is an excellent book. The author does a fantastic job of explaining organizational theory from a conceptual perspective. The book does not spend a lot of time discussing research methodology. The book does a great job of presenting information in a form that a manager can use in evaluating various approaches to organizational behavior issues. This volume will certainly remain an important part of my toolkit!

Schwab demonstrates that while forging a broad coalition to turn back Iraq was a significant diplomatic achievement, the international determination that defined the conflict in 1990-1991 eroded and gave way to a cumbersome policy of containment. That policy ultimately resulted in the dissolution of the coalition forged by the first Bush administration and burdened his successors as they struggled to achieve the longstanding goal of creating stability throughout the region. Part four explores the efforts of the Clinton and second Bush administrations in the Gulf. Saddam was one of the primary concerns of the Clinton administration, but so too were al-Qaeda, North Korea, China, and especially Yugoslavia. Indeed, his was the first administration to truly attempt to deal with these kinds of problems in a post-Cold War world. Despite their differences, there was a tremendous amount of continuity in the policies pursued by Clinton and George W. Bush. September 11 changed that, however, as Schwab chronicles in part five. In that section he explores how the current administration's adoption of a more proactive strategy of retaliation and preventative war has given rise to a new national security regime increasingly designed to fight asymmetric war while eliminating perceived threats to our national security and interests.
