So You Want To Be A Stylist.....then READ this book!

As a fashion professional I'm usually not impressed by style books especially those that promise to give "insider" tips! However, Sasha has cracked the code, sharing real information that is imperative for any one that wants to be in the business of styling or for the gal or guy that wants to look styled! I love that the information she dispenses isn't just from her experience, she calls on her friends that just happen to be the TOP STYLISTS in the game and we get their trade secrets as well! Every fashionista has a library of must have fashion books, now we have a new one to add on the list!

A Very Insider Guide

Read this book if you want to be a stylist when you grow up. This is not a great guide for real, grown-up women looking for every day style advice.
A lot of the information reads like warmed over articles from every fashion and beauty magazine you've read in the last 10 years. And since Ms. Charnin has written for Allure and others this makes sense. I for one am tired of style guidance having to be tied to celebrity and there is a lot of that here. I was looking for something smarter.
I got a lot more out of Style Evolution by Kendall Farr and How Not To Look Old by Charla Krupp.

Only buy if you want to become a stylist

This book is good if you want to become a stylist, but it't not really interesting to your average fashionista. Perhaps I misunderstood what the book is about, but I thought it would be more of a generic "how to" in styling yourself, from professional stylists to the stars. Instead, it's very "industry-based", so I got a little bored.

Well worth reading, and then emulation

The topic is uninteresting, unless you are interested in "shame." This is not a teeth-shattering thriller to be read in the daylight like some mystery who-done-it! But the way the author handles the issue, slowly working her way around it--while carefully examining and then peeling it away so as to reveal more, is amazing. This is good scholarship, even great scholarship worn on the sleeve and one may learn a lot not only about shame, but about how to go about interpreting an issue under research and study. Well-done!!

This is one of the most famous, most frequently cited, most taught works in moral psychology in the last two decades. Its themes are closely related to Taylor's famous essay on "Deadly Vices?" In addition to the thorough analysis of pride and the important distinctions drawn between shame and guilt, the book employs a highly nuanced cognitive theory of emotions that does not simply equate emotions with value-judgments, but ties them to complex perceptions of concrete value-gestalts (like Bob Roberts's book on emotions). This book also includes an important discussion of the quasi-virtue of integrity. Its price on Amazon marketplace indicates that the publisher ought reissue the paperback of this book.

Gabriele Taylor's first book is a milestone in contemporary moral psychology and remains, to this day, one of the most searching treatments of pride and related concepts.

Cookin' a slow death

"The white powder looked innocent lying there in the open, but this was the drug of the damned, the curse of the mankind: heroin, what some "smack," others "junk," "snow," "stuff," "poison," "horse." It had different names but the same effect. To all of its users-to all- to all of the dopefiends in Detroit ghetto - it was a slow death. - Donald Goines.

Before reading Dopefiend I never knew the importance of an addict having their `morning do' and unclogged works. I never imagined what it would be like to shoot dope in veins in places such as your neck, in your groin or between your toes or could even envision such sordid actions like sleeping with dogs for example. I never imagined what it would feel like having a monkey so heavy on my back that I routinely dug a bottomless pit of hell, or engaged in such acts that slowly took away my soul leaving only my shell.

Donald takes you through physiological minds from two perspectives, the drug dealer and the user. While the user is digging his exit with a slow death, the dealer believes he's holding the winning hand in the game. Dopefiend is a very bleak description of drug usage that takes place in the 70's in Detroit Michigan. It takes us through the transformation of several addicts and what begins and ends when you use heroin.

I enjoyed this novel from top to bottom; I liked how Donald would dedicate an entire chapter to a particular character giving us enough time to bond with what was happening during their downfall. His style of writing is excellent and very easy to follow. His vivid details made me feel like I was in the drug house helping Smokey find a vein, or running out of the local store with my floor model black and white TV screen. Should you pick up this street lit classic, you won't be disappointed.

I give Dopefiend a solid 5 stars.

This is my favorite Donald Goines book and one of my favorite books of all time.

I read 10 of his books . "Dopefiend" basically takes you threw the life of two dope fiends a man and a woman. one from a poor family and one from a middle class family. it is a great book it would answer any questions that u would have about dopefiends. like : why would some one even consider shooting up ?? or why would some one risk there life?? why cant they quit?? why would they even start?? and many more questions. it is very detailed and grimy. donald goines keeps it all the way real about the life of a dopefiend.

This is the third Donald Goines book that I have read and it is by far, the most gritty, graphic and gory one I have read yet. This man's descriptive abilities are so awesome that it makes you sick sometimes, but in a good way. If you are a person that has never really been exposed to drugs and the toll that they take on the user, and the way users live and breathe their next fix, then this is the book for you. At the end of this book, you will no longer have to wonder about junkie/dealer relationships or the effects of drugs, because Goines has given you all you need to know. Great read!

Best book on the subject I've read!

I've read a lot about financial math (I'm a physicist and love mathematics). This book is a gift. Just the tips (and code) on using Mathematica to process the data are worth the price alone. I don't buy into the Efficient Market Hypothesis and this book delivers (section 8.2) on fast markets. He correctly looks at the cash balance, something most folks gloss over, and sets up the various symbolic and numerical solutions in a useful way. The language is a bit terse and the structure drove me nuts until I got into the swing of the rhythm of the flow. I am grateful for the language now - we get a detailed look into the mind of someone who just plain KNOWS this subject. The fact you get the whole book as a series of Mathematica notebooks which are executible is a real plus. A few quick changes to the code and you have YOUR problem well on the way to solution. It is practical, explicitly direct, charmingly theoretical and powerfully presented. The only problem is I want a second volume and I want it NOW!

Tough book but very useful

This book is merciless; very complex, very dense. It is also, however, extremely useful. If Stojanovic were to publish ten more books on the topic, he would probably revolutionize the use of Mathematica in finance. The enclosed CD was also useful; such things are usually worthless but in this case, the book contains so much code that it would not be practical to implement without a digital copy.

The book is certainly a bargain at $70.

Its a tough read, but well worth it, most of the work is origional or is an origional take on what has been done before. A bit like what Hamilitonian mechanics is to Newtonian mechanics

Corruption in the FDA and on Wall Street...Unbelievable!

As someone who has followed the Dendreon Saga since 2006, what Mark Mitchell has described is nothing less than a tragedy of major proportions.

Bernie Madoff may have stolen $56 billion from unsuspecting clients, but those responsible for the heinous crimes described by Mitchell contributed to the early painful deaths of tens of thousands of men, many of whom could have been helped if they had had access to Dendreon's revolutionary immunologic treatment, Provenge. The treatment, for those who are not familiar with it, provides a median 4.1-month's life extension, which was the basis for its approval by the FDA in 2010. That means that half of the patients in the pivotal Phase III trial lived longer than 4.1 months. In fact, some have lived 7 or more years longer. The fact is, three years after receiving Provenge, there's a 38% improvement in survival in patients that have received Provenge compared to those patients in the controlled arm (32% of patients in the Provenge arm are alive vs. 23% in the controlled arm). So, the treatment is durable

I bring up these facts so that you will understand why Mitchell is so incensed, not only by the actions of the FDA (or better, the agency's 'inactions') as well as the behind-the-scene actions of certain government employees and highly conflicted (and named) special government employees (i.e., consultants to the FDA serving on advisory committees) to thwart Provenge's approval.

Even though the Provenge Advisory Committee convened on March 29, 2007 RECOMMENDED approval, the FDA sent Dendreon back to the drawing board for more data. The agency could have given Conditional approval to the treatment, thereby making it available while the company collected the additional data. But efforts mounted by several parties named by Mitchell--efforts that included a secret meeting held at the FDA immediately after the Provenge Advisory Committee Meeting to discuss strategy, letters leaked to the press (a version of one was found on the government-owned computer of an NCI researcher), and other tactics used to stop Provenge--make this book look like something out of a mystery thriller . . . except in this case, the dead, though unseen, are dead, nonetheless. And, as I said, they number in the tens of thousands.

We also learn, and here is where Mitchell has absolutely excelled, that seven hedge funds had placed counterintuitive trades following the Provenge Advisory Committee meeting . . . including the hedge fund run by (are you ready for this?) . . . Bernard L. Madoff. Why do I say `counterintuitive?' Because the advisory committee had just voted that Provenge not only was SAFE, but also, had demonstrated SUBSTANTIAL EFFICACY. So, what did Madoff and the others know about the FDA's real intentions, from whom did they learn it, and when did they find out that the agency had no intention whatsoever of approving the treatment? The question I want answered, and indeed, the one Hon. Preet Bharara, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, should be focusing on is: from whom did they learn it? If this isn't a classic case of insider trading, then I can't think of another in recent memory.

This book should be read by anyone who wants to lift the rocks on Washington and Wall Street and see what the cockroaches have been up to. It's not pretty, and what it says of these two institutions and humankind will turn your stomach.

The men who died waiting for Provenge deserved better. At the least, they deserve justice.

The aided and abetted corrruption on Wall Street should make you sick

All individual investors probably believed that one of the reasons it is so hard to make money in the markets is that the markets themselves are tilted toward super high wealth individuals that will destroy individual investors at the drop of a hat. But the depth and depravity of the criminal behavior on Wall Street exposed by Mr. Mitchell in this book, aided and abetted by the organizations that control the trading and that were created to protect the stock market interests of individual investors, is both astounding and repulsive.

This is not the work of some conspiracy theory nut, as one of the hedge fund toady reviews libels, it is a well documented, detailed, narrative showing that there is nothing too low for the hedge fund criminals to perpetrate, and they will be helped at every point along the way by organizations created with the sole purpose of preventing just such actions. Politicians and monitoring and control organizations acquiescing to every request of super rich filthy criminals, whose every action, if not specifically designed to destroy the U.S. financial system, will most likely result in that end.

Where is the country we used to have, the one that would identify criminals like those identified in the book, take away their trading rites for life, force them to pay back the entire amount of money they stole through their criminal actions (with extremely punitive penalties thrown in as well) and finally lock these thieves up for a substantial portion of the rest of their lives? Big banks controlling the DTCC, convicted criminals like Madoff writing new rules for the SEC to implement that will make stealing all the easier for the privileged few, the SEC deciding to dissolve rules in place for almost a century that protected the individual investor (uptick rule prime example) and then refusing to re-implement them when hedge fund thieves complain.

Murphy's book is a Must Read

Murphy makes an elegant and forceful case detailing the pervasive corruption throughout the Federal Government in multiple agencies effectively road blocking a life saving treatment for men dying from prostate cancer, in the case of Dendreon.

Agencies such as the SEC and FDA routinely employ personnel with grotesque conflicts of interest. Some of these persons are the same "expert authorities" who provide formal advice and guidance to policy decisions made within the agencies.

One of his examples are well published physicians who in reality are extremely well paid agents of investment groups such as multi-billion dollar hedge funds. Murphy provides ample facts and sources to provide the ammunition needed for a successful investigation and prosecution of many of these individuals and organizations. But, like the SEC investigation of Bernie Madoff ("Bernie is running a clean and above board investment group"), the status quo of systemic corruption provides the greatest financial and political payoffs for those managing the FDA, SEC and indeed throughout our Federal Government.

For anyone interested in studying or simply learning basics of investment, federal governance and human nature, this is unequivocally a must read book!

Skinny people are staving on the inside

Eating is probably my favorite activity, or maybe second to napping. I hate how people say "You can sleep when you die," but let's be clear, you CANNOT eat when you die, so I'm trying to get it all in now. Finally there is a book that completely supports my need to feed my face! I really appreciate the tips laced throughout the book ie "Don't waste your precious stomach space on dinner salads". Brilliant!

This book is for 'REAL'??!

I was not sure at this title. I couldn't belive what I was seeing. But on a lark, I ordered and found that it was exactly what it said it was. How to eat in the wrong way to add serious pounds. (or right if that is what you want, even mentions feeders,gainers and even bears) It had quiet a bit of humor and answered quiet a few objections to gaining weight. I really enjoyed the book. It is quiet humorous and considering how large much of the planet is getting.. You might just benefit from it.

I just started reading this & can barely put it down. It's soooo funny! It makes so many good points about why you should get & stay fat! (Not that I need tips on how to get fat, of course. I could've written this myself.) I'm definitely buying How to Procrastinate.
