good for beginners and highly stressed undergraduates

I found this set to be highly entertaining to listen to. The 5 hour course on the whole span of 2500 years of history certainly leaves out a lot of good things, but it also covers almost all the important points that will actually appear in your exam if you are currently enrolled in such classes in college. Amazing, isn't it? But the set narrated by Jacobi is so engaging that very soon you will stop doing other things you normally do while listening to an audio book. It does require your full attention if you really want to get something out of it.
The material is succintly written, but you can always replay the part you do not fully understand. To students I would recommend this set to help them prepare for the exams. Too many times I've read answers that just keep avoiding the main points. This set, in my view, is very much like private tutoring. It will help you through your notes point by point, simple and straightforward! However you do need to check on your own spelling of names.:)
The approach is traditional. The basic framework revolves around literary materials as it brings you through mini-biorgraphies of major playwrights throughout history. Supporting these literary giants, the conditions of performance and audience are also briefly explained. It recounts all the cliches you will probably encounter in basic level history of theatre classes. Thus Greek theatres evolve from a full circle to a semi-circle and Medieval theatre naturally grows from simple to complicated forms... Excerpts from key plays or documents are read by radio drama actors/actresses, so they sometimes sound quite funny (or mildly absurd). But they are well chosen and representative.

Terrific for theatre majors and general public

Not since I played the Naxos book-on-tape "A History of Opera" have I so much enjoyed a recorded non-fiction treat like David Timson's (NA 419914), narrated by the venerable Derek Jacobi on four audio tapes. \
The title is really misleading, since the text covers only Western theatre and even that not comprehensively, given the little over 5 hours of playing time. The author himself admits this in the notes provided with the tapes and can be forgiven. What there is here would make an excellent review for a theatre major studying for exams and an even better introduction to one not all that familiar with the story of our theatre as it progressed from the rites dedicated to Dionysus to what it is today. Of course, the important playwrights are touched upon (Shakespeare gets an all too brief treatment) and the English ones get what is perhaps a somewhat disproportionate amount of attention. But as English speakers, we will not carp at that.
An especially good feature of this set is the use of professional actors--Carole Boyd, John McAndrew, Teresa Gallagher and Caroline Faber--to give some short excerpts from major works. The booklet gives a brief "Glossary of technical terms not explained in the text," a need created perhaps by the author's being an actor.
Once again, you will enjoy hearing this set even if you have no exams coming up; and it will give you a very nice idea of where our present theatre has come from, if not where it is going.

A high-speed tour through European and US theatre

As a highly infrequent theatre-goer, I picked this up in the hope of plugging the many gaps in my understanding of what plays are all about. Visits to the theatre have left me frustrated and bored more often than captivated. Halfway through a performance, I'll be looking at my watch and thinking I'd be better off watching a video at home! Perhaps I'm simply re-living all those terrible plays I was forced to watch at school.
This audio CD has boosted my understanding and awareness of the theatre. Not only does it cover the history of playwrights, nicely giving name-checks to every author I've heard of, but it also lists the key achievements of many of the key directors, impressarios and actors. And it also covers the development of the physical stage from Greek tragedy to the modern era. And there's the odd bit of reasonably appropriate classical music (from the Naxos catalogue) to link some items.
In the course of five hours, this can only dip its toes in the water of each era, and it does have a bias towards the English theatre, but the main benefit to me is that it's got me wanting to go and see some plays again. A major achievement indeed!

A Brave New World

The last three years have been exciting times for architects and developers. Microsoft, in the spring of 2000, first announced a vision for computing termed Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS), which in February of 2002 materialized as Visual Studio .NET (VS .NET) and the Microsoft Windows .NET Framework. These products brought object-oriented programming to the world of Web development and helped mainstream the paradigm of connected applications using XML Web Services.

However, it could be argued that the biggest boon for developers working with Microsoft development tools such as Visual Basic 6.0 (VB), Visual Interdev, Active Server Pages (ASP), and Visual C++ was that the introduction of the .NET Framework unified the programming model. Now, developers could use a common Integrated Development Environment (IDE), core languages, and tools and reap the benefits of rapid application development (RAD) programming inherent in VB, Web server applications with ASP, and powerful object-oriented development with Visual C++. This unification created opportunities for developers to extend their skills into new application areas by leveraging a core set of class libraries tied to a runtime engine and development environment.

Fast-forward a little more than a year. Microsoft has now built on the foundation laid by v1.0 of the Windows .NET Framework by releasing v1.1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003. In this release not only has Microsoft consolidated features released after the initial release to manufacturing (RTM), including ADO.NET Data Providers for ODBC and Oracle, Visual J#, and ASP.NET Mobile Controls--formerly the Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit (MMIT)--it has further expanded the reach of developers by including the Compact Framework and Smart Device Projects (SDP). These two together allow developers familiar with the desktop Framework to use the same core languages (VB and C#), runtime engine, and IDE to create applications targeted to smart devices, such as the Pocket PC 2002.

But with this increased opportunity come additional challenges for architects and developers. The key is to understand not only the nuts and bolts of the technology, but how and in what scenarios to apply it when building solutions. This is the reason we wrote this book, and we hope the reason you've decided to read it. That is also why we strive in each section to provide the big picture in order to give you enough technical information to understand the challenges and techniques that can be used, while not getting bogged down in every last detail of implementation. For this reason, you'll notice that we rely heavily on short code snippets, listings, and pointers to other resources.

A Note about Audience

As mentioned in the previous section, we've written this book with architects, technical managers, and developers working in the corporate world in mind. Because these three roles often have a large diversity of skill sets, there may be parts of the discussion that are too detailed for some readers. If you find this to be the case, we urge you to rely on the executive summaries at the beginning of each chapter, which summarize key chapter points. We also recommend looking for the key point icons in the margins. These icons indicate special considerations or, as the name implies, key points that we don't want you to miss.

When considering the skill sets of developers and technical managers reading this book, we specifically had in mind (1) desktop Framework developers and managers who are now embarking on building smart device solutions, and (2) embedded VB developers who are now moving from eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0 (eVB) to the Compact Framework. As you can imagine, the needs of these two groups are inverse to one another. The former require little in the way of managed code and Visual Studio guidance, but more coverage of issues related to developing for mobile devices. The latter are already familiar with building solutions that include mobility but require information on Compact Framework specifics. Because satisfying both audiences is difficult, we've tried to walk a line that balances the two views without leaning too heavily in either direction.

Language Choice

One of the great benefits of working with the .NET Framework is the freedom to work in the language of your choice. This is an inherent benefit of working with code that is compiled first to an intermediate language and then finally to machine code at runtime.

Although the Compact Framework restricts this freedom somewhat through its support for either C# or VB .NET, applications written in either are functionally equivalent and on a par in terms of performance. And as with the desktop Framework, the class libraries that ship with the Compact Framework are the truly interesting part of the product because they encapsulate the functionality that developers will use. All the class libraries are accessible from either language, and so, learning what they have to offer, rather than language-specific syntax, is the key to building both desktop and Compact Framework applications.

For these reasons you'll notice that we included code snippets and listings in one of the two languages (not both, although rest assured that it is possible to translate any C# code to VB .NET and vice versa), although VB .NET is used more frequently to reflect the likelihood that a majority of eVB developers will choose to use VB .NET over C# because of its similarity to the syntax they are familiar with.

The Scope of This Book

This book is organized into three parts: The PDA Development Landscape with the Compact Framework, Essential Architectural Concepts, and Additional Programming Considerations. Each of the parts varies in length, with Part II, which describes the central architectures for handling data, being the largest and consisting of four key topics in five chapters.

The PDA Development Landscape with the Compact Framework

The first part of this book consists of Chapters 1 and 2 and lays the foundation for architecting solutions using the Compact Framework. The goals of these chapters are to put the Compact Framework in the context of mobility (Chapter 1) and to explicate the architecture and core features (Chapter 2) of the Compact Framework and SDP.

Together these chapters are written so that architects and developers will gain an understanding of how the Compact Framework is positioned and why you might want to develop solutions using this technology.

Essential Architectural Concepts

The part on architectural concepts is broken into four key topics that architects and developers typically need to address in their solutions:

Local data handling. Business solutions that are written using the Compact Framework will typically need to be able to handle relational, file-based, and XML data in order to display it to the user. Chapter 3 addresses this need by discussing how applications can access local data using the support in the Compact Framework for processing XML, reading and writing to files, and using ADO.NET. The techniques in this chapter apply to handling disconnected data, as well as data downloaded from a remote source.

Remote data access (RDA). Business solutions also have the need for accessing data over the Internet or on corporate networks. Chapter 4 addresses this requirement by discussing various architectures for accessing remote data including XML Web Services, sending HTTP requests, low-level networking using sockets and infrared standards developed by the Infrared Data Association (IrDA), and accessing Microsoft SQL Server 2000 remotely. The techniques in this chapter apply to connected scenarios.

Robust data caching. Chapter 5 discusses how applications can cache data locally on a device using SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition 2.0 (SQLCE 2.0). Most of the discussion will focus on the uses for and features of SQLCE 2.0 because it has many advantages over simply caching data through the use of files.

Synchronization. Finally, Chapters 6 and 7 discuss ways in which data can be synchronized, including a discussion of simple synchronization with a host PC using ActiveSync (Chapter 6) and following with the RDA and merge replication features of SQLCE 2.0.

Of course, all of these topics reflect the centrality of data access. This is no coincidence, because architecting and developing business solutions involve, in large measure, moving data around, editing it, saving it, and synchronizing it. As a result, in our discussion of the third and fourth concepts mentioned here, we focus considerably on SQLCE 2.0 and how it can be used with the Compact Framework.

This book does not address architecting solutions using Microsoft ASP.NET Mobile Controls (formerly MMIT)--a set of ASP.NET server controls that enables the development of Web applications for a variety of mobile devices--because there are other good resources already available and because the kinds of applications developed with Mobile Controls are fundamentally different from those developed with the .NET Compact Framework.

Additional Programming Considerations

The third part of the book consists of three topics that most mobile solutions will need to address: localization, security, deployment, and developer challenges.

Chapter 8 addresses how Compact Framework applications can be architected to adapt to devices running in different geographies. Chapter 9 is dedicated to the various techniques for securing both the device on which the Compact Framework code runs as well as its data. Chapter 10 discusses techniques for deploying Compact Framework solutions. Finally, the book concludes with a single chapter that discusses some of the challenges developers will face when building solutions with the Compact Framework. Many of these challenges relate to implementing features that are not directly supported by the Compact Framework or that are somewhat difficult to grasp at first.

Great book for technical managers, not for developers

This is a well written book with a nice overall structure and easy-to-follow language. Each discussion starts with an executive summary and ends with references to other resources for further reading, thus making it a very straightforward read. Although the title tells us this is a .NETcf book, you should pay attention to the subtitle, as the topics of architecture and general advice on mobile development are also covered at considerable length. This may or may not please you, depending on your role. For example, the chapter on security includes general theoretical principles on the topic but omits examples of using the Cryptography API. We notice this in other parts of the book, and in fact the first chapter is a pure retrospection into the history of mobile devices as supported by Microsoft. Add to my previous comments that the book is only 350 pages long and the fact that there are no complete/end-to-end code examples, and you can see why it is not aimed at programmers. To be fair, the authors don't hide this and they state in their preface that the target audiences are technical managers and architects.
Like anything that goes to print, there are some errors including: the recommendation of using ResEditor (it simply does not work with the CF); the suggestion that C# is 100% compatible between desktop and compact frameworks (what about `volatile'?); and the claim that the class loader ignores the build & revision number (or that for private assemblies the version number is not consulted), which is not true. Overall, though, the content is correct and for technical managers this is probably the best book on the subject (but certainly not for developers). Finally, a small note that there is no mention of SmartPhone 2003 since the writing must have been completed prior to its launch (or indeed prior to CE 4.2).

Two Heavy Hitters write a great book

As an avid Compact Framework enthusiast, I buy every book on the CF that I can find. As you may be aware, there aren't a whole lot of them out there, but they are all really good. This one is no exception. If you do much with .NET, then you probably know these authors already, and they lived up to their reputations with this one!
Why would you want this book? Well, most importantly it really explains the Why's of Compact Framework development. There really are a lot of considerations and while the CF is very similar to the full framework, there are a lot of differences. As a developer, this book thoroughly explains what you are getting into and how to avoid many common mistakes. However, even if you are a non-technical person this book will prove to be a great asset if you are involved in decision making. After all, who wouldn't want a mobile presence for their company? Well, like everything else, it comes with some strings attached. In most instances they are trivial compared to what you get. In others they may not be. Architectural considerations are critical because you are dealing with limited battery life, smaller processors and memory and reduced real estate. It's also a lot easier to lose a PDA than it is a desktop and since many of the advantages of using Handhelds are only realized when you have wireless access, issues like bandwidth and security can make or break any mobile initiative.
I think the best part of this book is its theoretical focus. It's very easy to run off and start coding, forgetting architectural concerns. In these instances, many find that getting a great little app that works great in a test environment isn't so good once you get it into production. This book can help you minimize the chances of that happening. Furthermore, it gives you a very sober perspective on what you will need to deal with. Due to the fact that the CF has only been commercially released for under a year, and PDA development hasn't been a practical reality for more that a few years, there just isnt' that much literature out there. And this book's focus on architectural issues and HOW TO Deal with them effectively will prove how hip the authors really are.
I've been really impressed with the recent direction of AW and they've been pumping out some really great titles. Couple a good publisher with some really informed and talented writers and you have a winner. Undoubtedly, this book is a winner.

A great book that will help you on your next mobile project

The Fox and Box dynamic duo have created a wonderful book that really explains how to be sucessful with your Compact Framework projects. The chapter on Localization saved me a lot of time when needing to make a large-scale Compact Framework application world-ready for a current client. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Go get it!

Emotional, Heart-Felt, and Sexy

Can two people that never stopped loving each get over the past and learn to love each other again? Heather D'Agostino is an amazing author and her Second Chances series is filled with so much emotion and heart-felt responses. Her descriptions and well-developed characters are always spot on. This is a book that can be read on its own, if you haven't read the other books in the series. One more thing, if you love books that raise the temperature in the room by a good 20 degrees, you're going to love The One That Got Away.

Jason has to return home to see his father who is dying of cancer. The problem is, Jason's dad abused him as a child and believes he is gay. Anita agrees to tag along as his lover. Unfortunately, Jason bears an amazing likeness to the Summerlands. Keith Summerland, a real pain is getting married in his hometown, and Jason is mistaken for Keith. Keith in the meantime has run off with wife of the Master of Charleston. The media makes everything complicated and the Mother of Darkness calls Anita's tiger.
I enjoyed this one as Jason has always hovered at the edges. I wish the reunion with his father had been more realistic.

Worst Book in the Series

I've had this installment of the Anita Blake series in my nightstand for over a year because I grew tired of the reoccuring issues/themes in the last couple of books; pissing contests with police or other law enforcement because she's a woman, guilt over ardeur and inability to control it, repetitiveness of sayings from book to book, as well as within the same book, lack of Jean Claude as a major character, etc. So, finally decided to pick it up after a year of stalling and again found myself disappointed and bored. Same issues occur within this book, except now there's a total lack of storyline. So, this will be the last time I make a Laurell K. Hamilton purchase (not just Anita Blake related, but all other publications also). I would like to finish the series in hopes that the flash of brillance seen in the first couple of books returns. However, I will be borrowing from the library from now on since these books are not worth spending money on.

Not as crappy as the last couple but really just a money grab.

It isn't quite the porno of some of the previous books. There is a lot of Anita sweating over silly crap that goes on for pages and pages. The scary part, yes part, was up to the usual standard, but seemed tacked on. The mother of all vampires makes a brief visit. Totally a drive-by. The entire book felt like "gee, I have a house payment coming up so let's crank out something quick". Very little in character or plot development. Richard shows up pretty much long enough to do an attempted rape and then leave in a huff. Had the, now mandatory, group sex, but skipped most of the details. Well the second one did anyway, thank goodness. Laurell, PLEASE QUIT WRITING PORNO. You have other series to do that crap. Just write the adventure and violence and scary and "how in the world will she survive this". You are the best at that. But when you have Anita whining and freaking out over crap that she did about a chapter back and then silly, detailed sex... Come on. With that said, I pre-ordered Skin Trade. Looks like Edward is back. Loved those. Action, Adventure, not just jerking material. Well, I hope. Maybe I just funded some more of Laurell's fetish wear.

Great book for beginners

I'm learning Polish because of my temporarily move to the country. At first I used Pimsleur Polish to study the language. It was helpful but I needed something more intensive. I found a Polish teacher in the local classified ads then had a family member mail me Beginning Polish: Revised edition, Volume 1 (Yale Language Series). While it had a lot of useful phrases, it was mostly dense grammar. My Polish teacher said, "This is a good book for ME to brush up on Polish." I was getting discouraged so she suggested we go to a Polish bookstore and find something else. This is the book we found.

First of all, it's engaging. There are tons of color photographs and images that make you WANT to learn from the book. Second, the audio CD, which coincides with the lessons, is produced with the beginner in mind. They voice actors talk slow and enunciate clearly. The lessons are logically organized and they simply make sense. I meet with my teacher twice a week and we go through the pages, one lesson at a time. My improvement has been much more rapid than before.

The only issue is that this is NOT a self-study book. You will need a Polish speaker to guide you through the lessons because almost nothing is defined in English. If you want to use this as self-study, you should be at least an intermediate Polish speaker.

I don't usually write Amazon reviews, but this book really turned the tide for me in learning Polish, which as you already know is a very challenging language. I've studied Spanish and Portuguese in the past and could only wish they made a book like this for those languages. Very highly recommended.

good language course

This is not the first Polish language textbook I've used, it's not even the second. It is the best though, in my opinion.
It starts off with a lot of the basics you will need in Poland, like introducing yourself formally and informally and filling in basic forms. The characters are all learners too, so they often ask people to repeat or explain things for them on the CD, which is fantastic because I don't have to have stuff translated so I can understand it!

This book focuses A LOT on grammar, which is a huge part of learning Polish, so you will need someone to work through it with you, as Polish grammer is COMPLICATED!!!! It is not a self study course! for the price though its a good deal, especially as it comes with the CD, and a website for backup worksheets, so you dont need to buy workbooks etc. what you get here is the full course.

I had about a year of Polish behind me when I started using this book, so I found the first few chapter easy, but it does get steadily more difficult. At the moment I'm using this book for half or one-third of my lessons so I can work on vocab lists (I hate grammar, I'm terrible at it, and I'm learning Polish for basic communicate, not for exams or anything) but I would recommend this course to anyone looking to start learning the language.

Impressive!

I've taken a lot of language courses, and I'm happy to say that this one is very well put together. I'm taking an introductory Polish class for adults at a Polish language school, and our teacher chose this textbook after evaluating several options. I recommend it for anyone who wants a serious yet modern introduction to the Polish language. I could see Level 1 being used in an introductory college class, but with the included audio and interactive online content, a motivated independent student could get a lot out of it as well. One point in this book's favor is that it includes some humor right from the beginning, which I think is invaluable in keeping language students engaged.

Published by the Glossa Polish Language School in Krakow, this book comes with MP3 audio files on a CD-ROM as well as online access to the text, audio and exercises. Your answers to the online exercises are checked automatically when you submit them, and when you get stuck the system will give you the correct answers. There are also online tests at the end of each chapter. To gain access to the online content, you register on the website and redeem an access code that is provided with your book.

A separately available workbook (Polski, krok po kroku: Workbook, Level 1 (A1/A2) (Polish Edition)) is also worth getting, because it contains exercises that reinforce what you learn from the main text. There are more expensive online-only "additional exercises" that you can purchase to go with the main textbook, but the workbook is more affordable and from what I have seen so far the exercises are similar. As you go through the main textbook online you initially have access to the "additional exercises," but toward the end of the first lesson you get a message (in Polish) saying that further access to the additional exercises will cost 95 euro. Online, the exercises in the workbook appear separately from the pricey additional exercises, but the chapters in the workbook do correspond to those in the textbook. I think it makes sense to do each workbook lesson after completing the corresponding lesson in the main textbook. The system saves your work as you go, but you can always clear an exercise and do it again. Apparently you can also get access to the additional exercises if your teacher has a subscription and assigns the exercises as homework. We are looking into that possibility. Note that the online version of the workbook includes quite a few more exercises than the printed workbook itself.

First of all, congratulations to write a book on NServiceBus.

This is my first time ever, I sit tight for couple of hours and completed a book in one shot (other than the Crime/Fiction Novels). The book presentation is perfect. It elevates readers experience & knowledge on NServiceBus step by step, perfectly. There was long time complaint about NServiceBus Documentation & Manual (other than sample code & few online articles on its website), I strongly believe this book going to end those criticisms.

This book is primarily targeted for hard-core developers on how to use NServiceBus. Finally, this book turned out to be a little more than a product manual. If any additional patterns discussed on this book along with other advanced component implementations, it would Mark[ed]AsComplete book.

Finally, if you are working on NServiceBus or planning to work on NServiceBus, it is highly recommended to keep this book on your bookshelf as a reference book.

Useful, but short

Learning NServiceBus contains nearly all of the information you need to get going with NServiceBus. However, it's a very short book, and in a lot of cases you can find very similar information for free on the particular website.

There's nothing wrong with this book, in fact it is well written and the examples are quite useful. However, it only gets three starts because I don't think it is great value for money.

Unfortunately, out of date. This book appears to cover NServiceBus 4, but the current version is 5 (and moving fast toward a version 6).

As cool and effective as it is, NServiceBus goes through syntax makeovers constantly. So even if this book is dead-on for version 4, being a version back is a serious shortcoming.
