Disappointed with 1981 version

I did not realize there were more editions of this book and, consequently, the book I received is the 1981 version. The pictures are not sharp and are very small in many cases making identification difficult. The shells are grouped together, many on a page, and the background colors often blend with the shells. Although this book is better than any I found at our local library, I cannot recommend the 1981 edition of this book and will be ordering the 1989 edition. It appears the 1981 edition has a black dust cover and the 1989 edition has a blue dust cover.

There are at least three books out that purport to show shells in a rather complete form for the world. All are necessary to use and there could be a dozen more. Shell species are so variable, each book shows a somewhat different line up which makes ID a lot easier if you can match from one or more books.

Disappointing 1981 edition

I must admit I purchased this book because of the 5 star reviews. I'm sorry that Amazon no longer offers views of the inside of books because had I seen this one I wouldn't have purchased it. I got the 1981 version so maybe the 1989 version is a lot better and worthy of the 5 stars. I'm reviewing the 1981 edition and if any of the reviews are for that edition, I'm at a loss as to why the great reviews. The photos of the shells are taken against colored backgrounds in groups instead of individual photos and it gives the effect of a shell collector's own amateur photos, instead of high quality photography. The photos are not crisp and clear and the colors are muted. There are light reflections off the shells and shadows on the edges of the shells. The smaller shells are hard to see and distinctions cannot always be made between two shells that are similar. In addition, the colored backgrounds themselves are a distraction and often not contrasting enough to the shells, such as the photos of orange volutes against an orange background. Also, yellow is a poor choice for the background of any shell. At least brown backgrounds weren't used! It gives the impression that half the fun in making the book was in the colored backgrounds and how pretty it will look when as the pages are turned. It is by no means a large collection of shells, though there are some nice specimens.

So bad!

I usually only bother to write a review if a book is really super good or really super bad. This was in the really superbad category, unfortunatly. This author thought he was sooo cool because he was a meth cook and was so proud of himself, it made me sick. When I was reading it I kept thinking it had to get better, but it just went on and on and on and on.... He cooked a batch and got with some chick, he cooked another batch and got with another chick, he cooked yet another batch.... And I think you get my point.

The author was not a bad writer, actually, but the content was so unimpressive that it did nothing to redeem this book in my eyes. He repeatedly calls women, almost every woman in the book, actually, either a bitc* or a "dope whore" or "crack whore". Unless you want to read a very repetitive account of a guy making, selling, and doing meth, and being real proud of it, don't buy it.... I sure wish I hadn't!

i couldnt put it down!

I absolutely loved the book and would recomend it to anyone who has a loved one who has been involved in the meth world. My husband got involved with meth/ice and it has destroyed everything including our family. I was new to the drug scene when his use started and I was totally blown away when I found out which was just about a year ago. Now I cant read enough about this horrible meth world, i'm just trying to make sense of it all and understand the mindset of someone who is going through this. My outlook on meth has totally changed in the past year and until someone goes through it ( which I wouldnt wish on my worst enemy)they have no clue what they are dealing with and they have no understand of how we still love our meth users. We see them go through hell and we cant do anything about - just sit and wait and be relieved when we get a call that they are in jail then at least we know that they are still alive and will be until they get out of jail again. I think the bad reviews might come from the fact that some people dont understand the repetion of the meth world. I can say firsthand that this is all so true and I can relate to every page in it.

Oh, what a world. What a world.

I felt like I had to take a shower after reading this book. I've known people like the ones who were characterized in Wayne's story. And I hope never to associate with them again.

Meth is a soul-destroying drug. The characters in this book are dirty, trailer trash, pathetic morons who are convinced their life has never been better.

I appreciate the author's honesty and talent in being able to weave together a pretty good story out of circumstances that would devastate most people. But he just hopped right back up on his horse (meth trade) and continued with the pathetic lifestyle that made him feel like an important person because a bunch of pathetic lowlifes treated him like a king to get some of his dope. It's sad.

Liz Gill has been working as a First AD since 1994, for directors such as Barry Levinson, Todd Haynes, Kevin Reynolds, and more, working on widely-seen films such as The Omen and Bloody Sunday. She has served as the director on several episodes of East Enders. She studied at Columbia University and NYU before beginning her career as an assistant to Martin Scorsese. An excellent guide

Finally!! It's nice to see a book that isn't just for future directors, actors, and screenwriters...

This book is informative, easy to read, and invaluable for anyone interested in what a 1st Assistant Director does. HOWEVER! This book doesn't just limit itself to the 1st AD position. Not only is there an amazing amount of information about the day-to-day job, she lets you know who you'll be working with (departments), some general challenges you will face, the equipment you'll use/encounter, and the skills you will need to succeed in the industry.

Although I already felt knowledgeable about the industry, Liz gave me insight that I am most grateful to have as I begin my journey into the world of film. I'd say this is one of the best books I have read about the logistical workings of the industry.

I hope you like this book as much as I do. I'm more excited than ever to get started and I'll definitely be reading it again.

I brought this as a gift for my husband as a stocking gift. I have never given a gift that has had such a big impact, he spent the rest of christmas day and boxing day reading and highlighting, He loved it! "Finally someone has put into words what it is that I do!"

Just what I was looking for

I stumbled into 1st ADing 3 years ago and I felt like I found one of my callings. However, I had a lot of gaps between my film school education in actually understanding what an AD really does. Without access to a DGA trained AD, this book helped to fill in some gaps in my learning. It doesn't answer everything but it is a great overview with helpful personal stories from the writer. The only thing that I wish it expanded upon was entry into the DGA and the role of Key Seconds or multiple 2nd AD's and how to schedule multi-camera shots. Otherwise it's a great place to either start or expand upon your knowledge of running a set.

Gorey Takes on Ballet

What a delightful, albeit macabre, Gorey story is THE GILDED BAT. It is apparent that Edward Gorey had a passion for ballet. He dedicated this book to ballerina Diana Adams. Every page demonstrates his knowledge of the subject, which he presents in a typically twisted, yet surprisingly tender way. In thirty pages of text (one sentence per page) and as many brilliant illustrations, Gorey delivers the biography of one fictitious dancer, Maudie Splaytoes, known later in her diva years as Mirella Splatova. If you are a dancer, you probably have the picture by now, and are scrambling to find your own copy of this book. We follow Maudie from her first steps in ballet, to her childhood debut as a sparrow in "Bain d'Oiseaux" (French for birdbath), on through stardom and her signature role as the gilded bat, and beyond to the abrupt conclusion of her career (only Gorey could have concocted this flight of fancy!). What amazes me is the way Gorey used brevity as his razor-sharp tool. He not only tells us a lovingly bizarre tale, but evokes an entire bygone era in ballet history, all in thirty sentences! His pictorial depiction of dancers makes you want to sit and study his drawings for hours. These are creatures with overly elongated hands and feet, with plump thighs and much too much turn-out. Here is a satirical tribute to the birds of ballet repertory, such as the Firebird and Odette/Odile from Swan Lake. And here is a tribute to the life of a dancer. I think this book would appeal to Gorey fans in general. A knowledge of dance and of the French language would make this an even richer journey. For ballet dancers and aficionados, this is required reading!

The Gorey ballet book

Edward Gorey's THE GILDED BAT is the grim yet hilarious tale of a diva ballerina in thirty sentences alongside Gorey's superb ink drawings. It's difficult to describe Gorey's work to a general audience, one really must see his art in order to know what he's all about. THE GILDED BAT does have all the trademarks of Gorey at his height: a setting sometime in the Edwardian era, odd children, deadpan humour, violence, and seedy goings-on that have to be read between the lines (a shocking account of lesbian rivalry is communicated by little more than a glance between two depicted women). To fully get the humour in this particular volume, you must have some knowledge of French, and just a bit of the genre such as Stravinsky's popular ballets. The way Gorey pokes gentle fun at ballet is rather similar to his opera-themed book THE BLUE ASPIC.

The book was originally published in 1966. Gorey first editions are collectors items and difficult to find for cheap or in good condition. This Pomegranate reprint is beautiful and very appropriate for giving as a gift. If you want Gorey for yourself, however, the most economical way to read his magnificient oeuvre is through the Amphigorey anthologies. THE GUILDED BAT, for example, is in Amphigorey Too.
