Motivational and Realness at its BEST!!!

There are tons of motivational books on the market, but sometimes it is hard to relate to the message that the book is trying to get across. I have read many motivational books from all the greats like Napoleon Hill, Stephen R. Covey, Bob Proctor, Deepak Chapra and the list goes on and on, but now we have Makini Smith. A Walk In My Stilettos is one of the most honest and raw books I have been exposed to. As a male you would think you may not be able to the messages that she fills her book with, but it is the complete opposite. As a man it made me want to step my game up not only as a human, but as a man as well. I would love to go in detail...but you have to take this book in to understand what I mean by that.

Do yourself a big favor and add this book to your collection...not as a one time read, but at a classic reference that you can always go back to for the rest of your life. This book will take you through a roller coaster of emotions that will honestly have you wonder how much can the human spirit take in one lifetime! Joy, pain, life, death, wealth, struggle, laughter, tears, friendships, family, relationships, religion...it just the tip of the iceberg of what you get with A Walk In My Stilettos that covers all these topics and then some!

Each chapter gives you a personal story that will take you on a vivid journey accompanied by learning experiences and solutions that can apply to all of us. Making Wood Block Prints by Merlyn Chesterman and Rod Nelson is an intriguing invitation for the uninitiated to discover the centuries old practice of wood block printmaking. Its practical presentation of materials lists, tables, definitions and pictorial examples introduce the reader to the process without overwhelming with too much text or detail. FAMILY HISTORY AND JAZZ BEAUTIFULLY RENDERED

In this highly readable and deeply personal account, music, specifically jazz, is explored as the conduit by which immigrants from the Indian state of Goa created community in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the 1950s and 60s. The author's father worked for Barclays Bank by day and played the accordion by night. Jerry Luis and his fellow Jazz Swingers members regularly took the stage at the Ocean Breeze, the city's most popular restaurant and nightclub. There, in snazzy suits and bow ties, the musicians played "Take the A Train," "Bye, Bye Blackbird," and other favorites to the delight of their audiences which drew from a number of Tanzania's social clubs. East Africa was once home to hundreds of social, sporting and cultural associations including at least four Goan clubs in Dar es Salaam as well as Greek, Portuguese, Scottish and Italian associations -- many of whom gathered to dance to the melodies of the Jazz Swingers."Waiting for Sunrise" also explores the monumental changes that Tanzania, a British territory and racially segregated country, underwent in the years before and after 1961 when it gained its independence. These shifts are examined by the author through the lens of the Goan community and the Jazz Swingers. The book ends with a chapter on the author's own musical journey as a blues performer.Toward the end of the book, the author reflects that, "With every few exceptions, musicians in Dar functioned somewhat in a vacuum, generally playing with their own ethnic or racial groups. This was so different from my own musical experience in the U.S., which helped to reinforce the notion that while we may be different, we are all connected." Family history and jazz meld wonderfully in this highly recommended account.

My girlfriend laughed her *** off!

As a Dutchman living in NYC I met Greg at a Dutch party where he shared some of his hilarious and very recognizable US - Dutch assimilation stories. This guy is funny and I had to buy his book to give to my American girlfriend to give her some clues on How to be Orange. She loves it. I hope she finishes the rest of the book by herself cause I'm over with the "OMG, listen to this one!!"

Book is a great gift for those who are, or who are about to be Dutchenized.

A Stranger in a Strange Land

As an American who has spent time overseas, this book spoke directly to that particular experience of being a stranger in a strange land, where customs can seem as weird and random as they do exotic and exciting. The author's self-effacing sense of humor provides not just laughs, but also an insightful look at the way Americans are viewed in Europe, both the good and the bad. Mr. Shapiro is a very funny man, but more importantly, his humor comes from a place of intelligence and emotional sensitivity. If you've ever been an expat - even temporarily - this will land for you. But even if you haven't spent time abroad, there is much here to entertain, and even to provoke a bit of thought on how we are both different and the same from our cousins across the globe. Great read!

Fun easy read for anyone who has ever lived abroad

Gregory Shapiro - The American Netherlander - tells the story of his assimilation in The Netherlands with lots of personal anecdotes. Having seen the show How to be Orange several times - in both The Netherlands and in the United States - it is a pleasure to be able to re-read the stories and hear his voice. Greg writes the way he talks!
The book is larded with funny pictures Greg took while touring The Netherlands for about 20 years. An added bonus are the illustrations by cartoonist Floor de Goede. These perfectly portray the absurd world Greg often experiences while living abroad.
