Handy reference guide for beginners, maybe for practitioners

Handy reference guide to the 27 (with Abijit, 28) nakshatras, or lunar mansions, used extensively in Jyotisha practice to find the specific character of the Moon (& other lagnas).

Jyotisha contains both solar & lunar astrological lineages. Nakshatra readings are from the older, lunar component. Westerners accustomed to tropical, solar-only astrology will find nakshatra divisions perhaps a very new concept. (For a historical explanation of the merging of solar & lunar systems in Jyotisha, see Valerie Roebuck "The Circle of Stars".)

Harness' "Nakshatras" provides a nice way to dip one's baby toe into the rich & complex lunar-house system. It offers about 3 pages of description for each nakshatra. 3 pages turns out to be perfect for beginner-level quick reference without detailed study.

Each 3-page description includes David Frawley's definition of the nakshtra's "shakti" or divine energy, the central stars in its astronomical constellation, ruling planet & ruling deities, animal symbol, and descriptive psychological profile. (Harness has a PhD in counseling psychology.) There is a brief but useful section on using nakshatras to establish relationship compatibility, and a note on kuja dosha. Good index too!(A great rarity in Jyotisha books...) At the end, there is an appendix containing 12 basic rashi profiles, which may be helpful for early beginners.

If you are starting from a Western astrological perspective and have never heard of nakshatras, by all means buy this modest volume for your Jyotisha bookshelf. It is approachable and easy to read.

Seasoned practitioners of the Vidya may find the descriptive material rather superficial, to the point of sounding vapid. This is definitely not a scholarly text. Considering the complexity of nakshatra lore, it is not even particularly informative.

However, there is one advanced feature that experienced Jyotishi may agree re-pays the cost of this book. That is Harness' by-permission copy of B.V. Raman's incredibly convenient nakshatra marriage compatibility chart, listed toward the end of the volume. If one does frequent compatibility assessments, this chart can be a time-saver.

Despite its limitations or perhaps because of them, "Nakshatras" offers good value to its intended audience of early beginner students of Jyotisha. Harness has done a service by packaging "the tip of the iceberg" in a pleasant, accessible style.

A Very Handy Resource on Nakshatras

Dennis Harness holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and has studied both Eastern and Western astrology. This book is his presentation of the Nakshatras, which are the 27 (or, for some 28) Lunar Mansions of Vedic Astrology. The Nakshatras have a particularly interesting import in analysis when we consider that in ancient Indian culture people identified the stars, satellites, and planets with demons, gods, and other supernatural forces as components and constructs of reality. Frequently divine and metaphysical factors were perceived as spiritual forces that dispensed grace and penalty to the individuals they contacted. Hence, the lunar mansions, which correlates with the 28-day lunar cycle through the zodiac, corresponds to a period of divine sovereignty as indicated by the Lord who presides over that domain in time. In Indian mythology, each Nakshatra is represented as one of the Moon's brides.
This entire text is devoted to a presentation of the Nakshatras, and it includes sections such as: Choosing Auspicious Lunar Nakshatras; Relationship Compatibility; a very well organized appendix that aids you in identifying Planets, Houses and Ascendants "at a Glance;" and a handy Sanskrit glossary. This text is very easy to read, and very well presented.

My current strategies are more conservative as my lifestyle does not depend on that extra money. However, some strategies I used before are more profitable and riskier than others. Choose the ones that fit your risk tolerance.

I have been a stock investor for over 30 years and a full-time investor for the last eight years with exhaustive stock research and performance monitors. This book is intended for a retail investor and I am one myself, not a professional writer who may never make a buck in the market.

A unique book for all investor.

This is an excellent book on all aspect of stock market topic, simplified investment strategies and understanding individual risk.

Mr. Tony Pow explains fundamental and technical strategies in a very unique way beginners can comprehend. His book has valuable information analyzing market timing, detecting bottom of sector, stocks and market plunges using indicator as: SMA and RSI-14.
Through out the book sharing his own investing advice "good and bad experience", knowledge researching Stock-ETF, easily explain layout charts and much more.

I recommend this book to all investors seeking to improve investing strategies and fine tuning your techniques.

Tony Pow has a gift of explaining his experience as an investor without the bull crap of trying to make you buy his stuff

I just bought this book due to the woes of opening market 2016 and being brand new to investing, my eyes were crossed with all the different reasons we are were we are and what one can do to "manipulate the market".

I skipped ahead to his chapter book 14, Investment Advices just to get a feel of his writing style. His research is phenomenal and doesn't overwhelm with big words or catchy "sales-like" tactics.

I truly believe this ordinary man, Mr. Tony Pow has a gift of explaining his experience as an investor without the bull crap of trying to make you buy his stuff. He seemingly just wants to share his knowledge, tips, and clarity of definitions for the kind of folks like me who want to understand something FIRST before jumping in with emotions of trying to make a boat load of money. I am liking the technical analysis side he brings.

I also bought his inexpensive book, A Nation of No Losers. Literally, I can not give him enough credit for his plain english and perspective on US relations with China. Thank you Mr. Pow.

Mr. Tony Pow talks about hidden gems in his book, well....quite frankly, he is a hidden gem. Thank you and I will also post my comments about this author to my Facebook page!!

"how the paint hits the canvas"

"That is what we thought then, this is what we know now."...to borrow a phrase Bob McCarthy has used. This book is about what we know now (or should know) thanks in large part to McCarthy's work in the field. This book doesn't rehash the information found in just about every other book involving sound and acoustics. It applies that knowledge along with technical data that has been collected over the course of his career to current real world technologies, systems and situations.

While various measurement tools have existed for quite some time, it has only been more recently that low cost solution (comparatively) have existed for analyzing our systems and their interaction with the environments we put them in. Now most anyone can afford to better understand what their systems are doing and why. Unfortunately the information that such tools provide is somewhat useless if you don't understand what it means, how to interpret it or how to apply it. This book doesn't teach you how to use such tools specifically so much as it addresses the reason the tools exist and how to use the information they provide to improve the listening experience and the efficiency of the systems that deliver the experience. McCarthy does this by sharing both the information that he has collected over the course of his career and most importantly, the knowledge that has been gained while compiling that information.

Besides the fact that McCarthy is in a unique position of having more experience in this area than maybe anybody else, he's also a hands-on guy who knows how to teach others. Anyone that has had an opportunity to attend one of his seminar courses knows he has a knack for making complex science understandable to almost anyone. I'm living proof of that and am happy to see that his knack has translated well to a very informative and interesting to read book. Detailed color graphics along with a few related comic strips help keep it all within reach.

If you use Smaart (or any other similar program), you will definitely get something out of this book whatever your experience level. Currently you won't find another book that brings this information all together with the real world experiences and insight as McCarthy has done, much less make it readable in an accessible fashion. While there maybe a handful of others who could possible write such a book with this type of applied knowledge, nobody else has. Reading this book will take you to a higher level of understanding of how sound system components react with one another as well as the acoustic environments that they exist within.

While McCarthy points out in the book that there used to be a division of art and science when it came to thinking how to evaluating sound system performance, the number of mixing engineers running Smaart @ theMIXsite is an indication that everyone is catching on that art and science go hand in hand. This book was a complete paradigm shift for me in understanding the current state of the art of sound system design and optimization. Bob's explanations of complex physical phenomena are, while dense reading, excellent and understandable. This book should be read by anyone who deals with sound systems of any size but particularly people who are dealing with line arrays (or more properly, point source arrays).

At first glance reading this book can be very intimidating, with its own language not found anywhere else in audio publications. I now read this book every day and it will be the reference book I will use when it comes to understanding Phase, Integration/alignment and optimizing of all things loudspeaker system related. I believe this book translates into all areas of professional audio, not just Live Sound Reinforcement.

Romance with a Twist

This author never disappoints,this is the type of book you want to read twice to make sure you caught everything. Like the heating problem with the house; it's a visual read, it's like watching a movie. My only complaint is the amount of time I have to wait between book releases, I hope the next book comes out soon. Don't sleep on Billy London!

Needs a sequel

Love, love this story... it's so good, Billy London as usual has outdid herself. I have to say that I am biased because she is on my automatic buy list, and I cant think of a novel/novella that I haven't liked.
This story is wity, romantic, and puts an interesting spin on the idea of a haunted house.
I cant say this enough this is a must read.... at least try the sample ;)

BLOODY BRILLIANT!

Terminally-ill Geariod is haunted by a beautiful but dead Aoife a doctor who was killed at a young age, puts his life at a stand still. All Geariod wanted to do was die in piece but Aoife wasn't having none of that. After 40 years Aoife has no idea of who or why she was murdered once she realized Geariod could see her set on a journey that would lead to the killer (s) responsible. This was a fast paced emotional, yet sexy tale, Geariod was very bad a** and Aoife was quite humorous for a ghost. Billy pulled your heart strings in this dark IR tale with a few life lessons all turns out well bringing a new meaning to the saying, "nothing short of death can keep me from you!"

About the Author
Charlotte J. Fiell studied at the British Institute, Florence, and at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts, London, where she received a BA (Hons) in the History of Drawing and Printmaking with Material Science. She later trained with Sotheby's Educational Studies, also in London. Peter M. Fiell trained with Sotheby's Educational Studies in London and later received an MA in Design Studies from Central St Martin's College of Art & Design, London. Together, the Fiells run a design consultancy in London specializing in the sale, acquisition, study and promotion of design artifacts. They have lectured widely, curated a number of exhibitions and written numerous articles and books on design and designers, including TASCHEN'S Decorative Arts series, 1000 Lights, 1000 Chairs, Design of the 20th Century, Industrial Design A-Z, Scandinavian Design, Graphic Design for the 21st Century and Designing the 21st Century.

good book for FOOTBALL strategies

The book is pretty slim and focuses strictly on FOOTBALL, just as promised in the title. It is a bit dry and written on an abstract level. Tactics in throw-ins and free kicks is not covered, but there is some discussion of tactics on corner kicks. Overall, a quick read that introduces different attacks and defenses fairly well.

I bought this book because a few of my friends and I are looking to start a regular soccer practice, and I'm very glad I did. This book taught me the importance of mental strategies, how to steer my mind away from negative beliefs that can hinder a good game, and how stay sharp and motivated. The book also contains tips to help create the healthy habits needed to play well.
I found the chapters on nutrition and training very interesting - we're now setting up training and diet regimes thanks to the easy to follow advice in this book. I enjoyed finding out about how different nutrients affect the body and which are the best foods to eat when training, or before and after a game. Its been great fun trying out all the work out exercises described, and my muscles certainly ached the day after!
The book also goes into a good amount of detail on the different strategies you can apply to your game depending on which position you're playing.I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their game, or those who want to learn a little more about the sometimes complex game of soccer.

Soccer Strategies On and Off the Field That Will Help Improve Your Game

The author does a very good job of presenting 100 strategies for soccer players that will improve their game and ultimately can be used in real life. The first chapter is on mental strategies and include visualization exercises and breathing exercises to keep you calm under the stress of the game. It tells you how to focus, set and achieve goals and how to make a habit out of helpful techniques. The chapter on nutritional strategies will ensure you have enough energy and strength for the game. Carbohydrates are important for maintaining energy and protein is important to build strong muscles. The chapter encourages you to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and stay away from unhealthy foods and processed sugars. It gives you tips on vitamins, avoiding caffeine and gives you the 10 most important foods soccer players should eat.

If you are goalie, you will find chapter three very informative. It takes that position and gives you all you need to know about it along with strategies on getting better at it. It explains how to speed reaction time and read the other players. The basics are discussed including catching the ball, communication with the team and using hands and legs. The chapter for playing offence explains how to keep with the tempo of the game and not fall behind and gives you ideas on exercises to get better at the position like passing and running exercises and defensive plays. It takes the striker and and center fullback position and explains techniques on how to better their plays. Defensive strategies include suggestions for the sweeper, right and left fullback, midfielder, wingback and winger, all of which will improve their game dramatically.

Other strategies included in the book are on how to conserve energy so you can get to the end of the game successfully and techniques like kick an chase. Corner kicks are discussed as well and then the author goes on to talk about injuries and being part of the team in order to ensure success, and these are just a few suggestions that are in the book. The author tells you what to practice in order to get better in whatever position you choose to play and just general suggestions for playing any position.

The exercises and training strategies chapter is worth the book in itself. It gives you great workout suggestions for training time and how to keep yourself from getting injuries during training time. If you do have an injury, there are suggestions on how to deal with them.

I would suggest this book for anyone who plays or wants to start playing soccer.
