Pretty Things For Nice People: Tales of Patrons & Artisans-----The Challenges and Triumphs of 20th Century Artisans in New York, by Joseph

For nearly a century, three generations of Fiebiger men created masterpieces in metals for the most well-known families and institutions in America. Their firm, P.A Fiebiger Inc., became a legend for its dependability and creativity. In the beautifully illustrated and insightful Pretty Things For Nice People, Joseph G. Fiebiger, grandson of the founder, pours out his passion for the works and their patrons as he tells an American story of hard-earned success and of creating and protecting lasting national legacies. Pretty Things For Nice People is a tribute to ingenuity and industry and a historic volume that may be regarded as the firm’s final work of art. Today, the firm’s influence is seen in such important institutions as the Morgan Library, The Frick Collection, Central Park, the U.S. Capitol, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ellis Island and that American icon with the French foundation, the piece de résistance, The Statue of Liberty. This book reveals the continuing love story between artisans and their patrons. It explains how they unite to transform vision into reality in new projects and to protect and restore historic works. In perhaps the most famous of these efforts, one particular lady became both patron and an object requiring restoration: America’s beloved Statue of Liberty. Many of the sometimes warm, sometimes testy encounters in this book are more personal than monumental. CBS President Frank Stanton wanted to protect something his late wife loved; Oscar-winning actor Paul Newman became indignant at a presidential sleight; New York socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor measured her trust of men by her love for dogs; and The Donald sought help in a quest for a design that was years ahead of its time. Pretty Things For Nice People presents a rare, authentic and expert examination of the Great Lady in the Harbor. Demonstrating that she exists in more than metal and stone, the author conveys the uplifting dynamic she instills in so many visitors today – just as she did for millions of newly arriving Americans through the decades. This book unveils the ambitions and challenges of the architects, conservators and interior designers whose ideas were brought to glorious reality by talented and dedicated artisans. These projects – many now part of the texture of America – encompass Old World, high tech and low tech methods skillfully supported by the undying belief that necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention. Relying on common sense and experience, these artisans solved some of their most puzzling problems on major restoration projects by employing common household items – orange juice and ice. While some portions of the book are poignant and others funny, some take the reader behind the scenes in such places as the U.S. Capitol and the world’s finest museums. The author demonstrates that no design is just a design and no statue is just a statue. He tells the inside stories such as how famous architects use their skills to gently poke fun at wealthy clients and how the death of President Abraham Lincoln contributed to the creation of the Statue of Liberty. Perhaps the greatest love affair between the Fiebiger artisans and a dramatic work of art is the relationship with the Statue of Liberty. Joe explains the challenges of construction and marvels at the talents of acclaimed engineer Gustav Eiffel (10 years before his famous tower), artist Frederick Bartholdi and architect Richard Morris Hunt – each man’s contributions essential to the creation of the symbol of liberty. Dynamic, knowledgeable passages and vivid photographs – from the broken chain at her feet to the majestic torch -- give readers a more intimate perspective of the project that restored the reign of the Lady in the Harbor.

Pretty Things For Nice People: Tales of Patrons & Artisans-----The Challenges and Triumphs of 20th Century Artisans in New York
By Eric Cabot
Pretty Things for Nice People is a delightful memoir and behind-the-scenes view of what is arguably the most respected and influential firm of artisans who worked in twentieth century New York City. Pretty Things is written by one of the nicest people of all, Joseph Fiebiger, who took the reins of his family's metalworking company in the late sixties. In this book Fiebiger uses a breezy, accessible tone to lead the reader through a candid, and often witty, tour of a sampling of projects that include major restorations of public buildings and original masterpieces, rendered on both the colossal and domestic scale. The journey begins with a small commission for an iron fence for a church in Brooklyn and culminates with massive restorations of two American treasures, The Statue of Liberty and the main building at Ellis Island, which has the largest copper roof in the country.

The "pretty things" part of the book offers insight into the technical challenges and the firm's often novel solutions. By way of explaining how the projects were completed by orchestrating teams of people with varied skills--be they in the form of design, metallurgy, or hands-on metalworking-- Fiebiger is unstinting in offering well-deserved praise for each person's valued contributions. However, Fiebiger is equally free in offering his perspective on some of the interpersonal difficulties encountered, especially with the larger, high-budget, high-profile works.

The "nice people" part of the book's title signifies a non-technical aspect of each project. Mr. Fiebiger, always respectful of the ancient traditions of trust and obligation between artisans and their patrons, gives us his personal view of the nature and motivations of some of his most interesting clients. Some are wealthy, often generous, members of high social standing, while others are among those entrusted with curating or maintaining well-known institutions such as New York's Metropolitan Museum and public properties such as Central Park and the U.S. Capitol.

This book, with is its in-depth look at both the technical and human sides of many interesting works, deserves a place on the shelf of anyone interested what lies behind the facade of artisanal metalworking projects in our modern times.

A True Classic about a Company that knew what it meant to be a Fine Craftsman in America!
By carl close jr
I just finished reading the book" Pretty things for nice People" written by Joe Fiebiger and I'll have to say is is absolutely Fantastic!!!
His writing style is fun and and allows the reader to peak inside a life that was filled with wealthy and powerful people and to see just what it takes to help these clients get what they want . Joe' s company P A Feibiger was the leading Decorative Metal working company in New York and provided the very best of Forged and delicately fabricated metalworkthat the nation has ever seen . Under Joe's Direction he took on some serious challenges , such as restoring the Statue of Liberty as well as creating new Ironwork fences at the Frick Museum in NewYork City. All this work matched the original Masterpieces in exactness and spirit! This book is a real treasure in that Joe loves to add little back stories about the clients and the jobs that became real challenges for the companies master craftsmen as well as Joe himself. The book includes many funny stories that Joe conveys about New York socialites as well as well known real estate developers that will leave you in stitches.
Brilliantly Included in his writings you will find a multitude of techniques that the Company employed to repair and create some of Americas most beloved works of decorative art. .
As a Artist Blacksmith and business owner that services a similar client base I truly appreciate his thoughtful writings and and his extreme knowledge about the fine art of metalwork. I will be purchasing many of these book as gifts for fellow craftsmen as well as architects and designers who i collaborate with and feel there is a real value in everything Mr Fiebiger has written about
I Highly Recommend this Book and Know you will be entertained as well as enlightened about what it takes to be a leader in artistic metalwork in New York City and the journey to get there !!!! Carl L Close Jr Principal Hammersmith Studios LLC

"Pretty Things....." is a nice read
By GeorgeB.
Joe Fiebiger (author) is a modern day business man. He has taken over the family Iron Works business handed down from his father and grandfather (founder) - their memory is with his every move.
The early chapters in the book discuss people who were very influential in Joe's career. The bulk of the book looks at projects done for such notable clients as Brooke Astor and Donald Trump. A good portion of the book gives an in-depth accounting of Joe's signature project, the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty, in the 1980's.
Throughout the book, Joe interjects his own feelings as problems and awkward situations arise. Joe is an interesting guy and I found myself laughing at his "off the cuff" comments.
I enjoyed the book. It's an impressive list of names and places that kept me engaged throughout.
